Overview[]

Qatar[]

Qatar is a small peninsular nation bordering Saudi Arabia in the Arabian Peninsula that was a part of the then emirate of Bahrain for most of recorded history. Following the Qatar-Bahrain War of 1867-1868, Qatar had for the first time been considered a distinct foreign entity from Bahrain by the resulting peace treaty initiated by British Colonel Lewis Pelly. The House of Al-Thani, which has supervised the State of Qatar since 1849, was recognized in the treaty as the ruling family of Qatar under Mohammad bin Thani.

Becoming a sheikhdom under the control of the Ottoman Empire from 1871 to 1916, Qatar had gained independence from the Ottomans in 1916 and became a British Protectorate. In 1949, a massive oil field in Northern Qatar was discovered. Due to the details of the treaty in which Qatar became a British Protectorate, Qatar was able to remain autonomous and break from Great Britain in 1971. As the Al-Shaheen continued to be exploited by Qatar Petroleum, the economy of Qatar had grown rapidly from being a poor pearling peninsula in the Middle East to becoming the wealthiest nation in the world based on Gross Domestic Product Per Capita. Qatar has the third largest proven natural gas reserves in the world, behind Russia and Iran and ahead of the United State of America.

Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani[]

Hamad was born in 1952. His mother died soon after the birth and he was raised by his uncle. He graduated from the British Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in 1971 and commissioned as a lieutenant colonel. A few months later he returned to Qatar and was made commander of a mobile brigade, which later became a force called "Hamad Brigade".[9] In 1972 Hamad had the rank of general, and became army chief of staff. Next he was appointed commander-in-chief of Qatar's armed forces with the rank of major general. In 1977 he was named minister of defense.

Hamad was appointed Heir Apparent of Qatar in 1977 and held the post until 1995. In the early 1980s, he led the Supreme Planning Council, which sets Qatar's basic economic and social policies. From 1992 Hamad had a growing responsibility for the day-to-day running of the country, including the development of Qatar's oil and natural gas resources. On 27 June 1995, after deposing his father in a bloodless palace coup, Hamad became Emir of Qatar and was crowned on 20 June 2000.

Before Hamad's ascension to the throne, he had set the financial and economic plans for the country, effectively governing the country's finances; however, his father as Emir had full control of the affairs of state. Following taking the throne, Hamad had begun to fully exploit the Al Shaheen Oil Field and the growing economic investment in oil internationally, and effectively used Qatar's history as a landing point during international flights and exploited a rapidly growing tourism economy. Hamad had also made Qatar Airways a premiere international airline, becoming central to the Qatari economy outside of oil exports. He also played a key role in founding the state run media outlet Al Jazeera, which is internationally considered one of the most important media sources for the entire Middle East & North Africa region. Hamad's control of the small Emirate effectively made it the wealthiest country in the world during his reign, and had secured multiple opportunities to appeal to travelers abroad through securing the hosting rights to international competitions and political summits, including the FIFA World Cup in 2022.

Dawn of Man[]

"Greetings Your Highness, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar. Your reputation as a frugal financier precedes you. After bloodlessly taking the throne from your predecessor in a coup d'état, you took the small, wealthy Gulf State of Qatar and brought it to unimaginable heights as the wealthiest nation on Earth. Without shirking your faith or principles, you lead what used to be a footnote in international politics into one of the most prominent powers in the world. You founded one of the world's leading news outlets, Al Jazeera, and have maintained hegemony over the Arab world through the power of information. Your people became the leaders in sporting infrastructure in the Middle East. And most prominently, Qatar had increased its fuel reserves in no small part thanks to your undying resolve.

Oh great Emir, the strife of financial burden comes for us all, and it must be answered by a sharp and calculating mind. Your people are wealthy and growing beyond imagination, and they need a leader who will foster such growth. Can you ensure economic prosperity and, in times of hardship, leave the darkness to find new heights? Can you build a civilization that stands the test of time?"

Introduction: "Welcome to Qatar, and God's Blessings upon you! I am this land's Emir, Hamad, son of Khalifa, of the House of Al Thani. I would love to speak with you regarding trade. Shall I interest you in a trip to the Souq? A tour on one of our Dhows? Or shall we just get straight to business?"

Introduction: "Ah, it is nice to meet you! I bid you welcome to the Pearl of Arabia, Qatar! I am Emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Do not mind the construction, we are just preparing for our next football tournament. Care for some tea?"

Defeat: "So you think we shall kneel to your might? Think again! We shall always fight you, even if it is in the shadows!"

Defeat: "You have plundered my land of its natural wealth, and you have stolen the wealth my people had earned through endless toil. Is there no end to your greed?"
