Overview[]

Portugal[]

Inhabited since prehistoric times, Portugal was reached by Phoenician and later Carthaginian traders in the first millennium BC, there meeting Celtic tribes that had pushed into Iberia across the Pyrenees. Over the following centuries, the Romans, Suebi and Visigoths ruled the peninsula; but the history of Portugal might be said to begin with the Muslim invasion in 711 AD. During the Reconquista, Portugal was born as an independent Christian kingdom in 1143. Spearheading the "Age of Discovery," in the 15th and 16th centuries Portugal would establish the first global empire, stretching from South America to Africa to the Far East. The 1800s saw the dismantling of that empire, Brazilian independence in 1822 being the most serious blow to the power and prestige of Portugal.

After the 1910 revolution which ended the monarchy, Portugal suffered through a succession of juntas and dictatorships until democratic elections were finally held in 1975. A new constitution in 1976 and membership in the EEC in 1986 insured that it would remain a progressive democracy. The erroneous view that Portugal has been no more than an outpost on the fringe of Europe was summarized by American journalist Richard H. Davis, who wrote, "Portugal is a high hill with a white watch tower on it flying signal flags. It is apparently inhabited by one man who lives in a long row of yellow houses with red roofs, and populated by sheep who do grand acts of balancing on the side of the hill." But, with its rich history and culture, and now one of the world's most globalized nations, Portugal is much, much more.

Carlos I[]

Carlos I was king of a troubled Portugal that was beset by colonial disputes, grave economic difficulties, and political unrest during his reign (1889–1908).

The son of King Louis and of Maria Pia of Savoy, daughter of Victor Emmanuel II of Italy, he married Marie Amélie of Orléans, a granddaughter of the French king Louis-Philippe, in 1886 and succeeded his father on Oct. 19, 1889. Forces generated by mistakes made before his time proved to be the undoing of this talented and intelligent man, who was also known for his paintings and oceanographical studies. At home, republicans, disaffected monarchists, and Freemasons kept up a running opposition. Popular indignation over the British ultimatum of 1890 demanding Portuguese withdrawal from certain African territories resulted in the republican revolt at Oporto (January 1891).

In an effort to surmount political difficulties and bring about economic and administrative reform after a series of strikes and revolts, Charles appointed João Franco as prime minister in May 1906 and allowed him to assume dictatorial powers soon thereafter. Although some useful reforms were effected, strong opposition was aroused by governmental coercion and controversies over extravagances and the private life of Carlos. While driving through the streets of Lisbon, the king and his eldest son, Louis Philip, were assassinated. Carlos was succeeded by another son, Manuel II.

Dawn of Man[]

"The Kingdom of Portugal is beset by calamity, O' King Carlos I! Beginning from the onset of your reign in 1889, your kingship would be one marred by all manner of strife. Republicans, monarchists, and occultists alike had grown discontented by Portugal's decreasing prestige on the world-stage, and her economic bankruptcy threatened to descend the kingdom into chaos. But whilst you sought to appease these disasters with the appointment of able-minded ministers, wicked forces would plot treason, and you would be violently assassinated in 1906, paving the way for your son, Manuel II, and the eventual and tragic downfall of 500 years of kingship.

Disaster may have overwhelmed Portugal in your time, but now is the chance to save it from destruction. King Carlos I, can you tend to your kingdom's needs in trying times? Can you bring stability and prosperity to your people and usher in a new age of science and discovery? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "Welcome, welcome. I am Carlos I, king of Portugal. Tell me, do you share in the fondness I have for the sea?"

Defeat: "Let me retire to a life at sea. It's all I've ever wished."
