Overview[]
Poland[]
Invasion, occupation, partition, rebellion and rebirth - that cycle has characterized the tragic and triumphant history of Poland for the past millennium. Lying between the Baltic Sea to the north and the Carpathian Mountains to the south, the Polish plain served as the gateway for invasions of the heartland of Europe from the east and invasions of the vast tracts of Russia from the west. Poland became a recognizable ethnic and political entity in the mid-10th Century AD under the Piast dynasty of kings; its modern history begins in 966 when the first Piast king, Mieszko I, was converted to Christianity. For hundreds of years afterward, Poland's fortunes waxed and waned at the hands of powerful neighbors and invaders, from the German Teutonic Knights to the Mongol Golden Horde to the Soviet Union's forces. Even in times of national crisis, however, Polish ideals of revolution and independence remained strong. Those ideals, carried abroad by Polish expatriates such as Pulaski and Kosciuszko, informed the American and French revolutions. The Polish constitution of 1791 AD, the oldest in Europe, incorporated those same democratic ideals. Restored as a free nation in 1918 but ravaged by two world wars, few peoples suffered as much in the 20th Century as the Poles. Following a half-century of totalitarian rule as a communist satellite, in the 1980s the Polish movement Solidarity oversaw its transformation into a sovereign state once again. At the beginning of the 21st Century, Poland is a progressive, market-based democracy, an important member of both NATO and the European Union.
Jadwiga[]
Saint Jadwiga, also known as Hedwig, was the first female monarch of the Kingdom of Poland, reigning from 16 October 1384 until her death on 17 July 1399. She was the youngest daughter of Louis the Great, King of Hungary and Poland, and his wife, Elizabeth of Bosnia. Jadwiga was a member of the Capetian House of Anjou, but she had more close forebears among the Polish Piasts than among the Angevins. She was the youngest daughter of Louis the Great, King of Hungary and Poland, and his wife, Elizabeth of Bosnia. Jadwiga was a member of the Capetian House of Anjou, but she had more close forebears among the Polish Piasts than among the Angevins. With her mother's consent, Jadwiga's advisors opened negotiations with Jogaila, Grand Duke of Lithuania, who was still a pagan, concerning his potential marriage to Jadwiga. Jogaila signed the Union of Krewo, pledging to convert to Catholicism and to promote conversion of his pagan subjects. Meanwhile, William hastened to Krakow, hoping to marry his childhood fiancé, Jadwiga, but in late August 1385 the Polish nobles expelled him. After her sister Mary died in 1395, Jadwiga and Jogaila laid claim to Hungary against the widowed Sigismund of Luxembourg, but the Hungarian lords did not support their claim and Sigismund easily retained his Hungarian throne. Jadwiga died four years later due to postpartum complications. She was canonised by fellow Pole Pope John Paul II in 1997.
Dawn of Man[]
"Hail, the holy Jadwiga, Saint and King of Poland. A scion of the House of Piast and Capetian House of Anjou, you were born to Louis the Great of Hungary. Upon his death, you settled in Poland and agreed to marry the far older Jogaila, with whom you were co-ruler. To do this, you made great sacrifices for your beloved Poland, including agreeing to void your unconsummated marriage to William of Austria. But your sacrifices were appreciated by your people, bringing Lithuania into the fold of Catholicism, eventually joining Poland in union. You were an adept negotiator, placating the Teutonic Order while Poland regained capability. Domestically, you were a charitable ruler, establishing new hospitals, schools and churches while restoring old ones. You promoted the use of vernacular in church services, especially the singing of hymns in Polish. However, you died far too soon, on the birth of your first daughter, Elizabeth Bonifacia who passed with you.

Oh blessed Jadwiga, you must wake from your sacred slumber to bring good to your blessed country. Havoc and disorder rule the world once more, and your diplomatic skills and upstanding character are much desired in this time of lies and deceit. Will you be a pious example for all your subjects once again? Can you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?"
Introduction: "Welcome to lands of Poland. I am her king, Jadwiga. I hope you hold piety in your heart."
Defeat: "I have prayed long to be delivered from this day. I hope that you will at least donate my treasures to the protection of scholarship."
