Overview[]

Poland-Lithuania[]

Invasion, occupation, partition, rebellion and rebirth - that cycle has characterized the tragic and triumphant history of Poland for the past millennium. Lying between the Baltic Sea to the north and the Carpathian Mountains to the south, the Polish plain served as the gateway for invasions of the heartland of Europe from the east and invasions of the vast tracts of Russia from the west. Poland became a recognizable ethnic and political entity in the mid-10th Century AD under the Piast dynasty of kings; its modern history begins in 966 when the first Piast king, Mieszko I, was converted to Christianity. For hundreds of years afterward, Poland's fortunes waxed and waned at the hands of powerful neighbors and invaders, from the German Teutonic Knights to the Mongol Golden Horde to the Soviet Union's forces. Even in times of national crisis, however, Polish ideals of revolution and independence remained strong. Those ideals, carried abroad by Polish expatriates such as Pulaski and Kosciuszko, informed the American and French revolutions. The Polish constitution of 1791 AD, the oldest in Europe, incorporated those same democratic ideals. Restored as a free nation in 1918 but ravaged by two world wars, few peoples suffered as much in the 20th Century as the Poles. Following a half-century of totalitarian rule as a communist satellite, in the 1980s the Polish movement Solidarity oversaw its transformation into a sovereign state once again. At the beginning of the 21st Century, Poland is a progressive, market-based democracy, an important member of both NATO and the European Union.

Tadeusz Kosciuszko[]

Andrzej Tadeusz Bonawentura Kosciuszko was a Polish-Lithuanian military engineer, statesman, and military leader who became a national hero in Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and the United States. He fought in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth's struggles against Russia and Prussia, and on the US side in the American Revolutionary War. As Supreme Commander of the Polish National Armed Forces, he led the 1794 Kosciuszko Uprising.

Dawn of Man[]

"We rise to greet you, Tadeusz Kosciuszko, son of liberty and leader of Poland-Lithuania! After serving with honours in the American Revolutionary War, you returned to your homeland to serve your people. An innovative military commander and dedicated advocate of human rights, you defended new liberal laws against both reactionary nobles and the hegemonic Russian army. Outmanned and outgunned, your armies prevailed against the invading threat, but your goals of liberty were quashed when the King surrendered to the enemy. Even in exile, as the Commonwealth was slowly dismantled by its imperial neighbours, your dreams did not die! You returned to Poland-Lithuania and began an uprising, pledging to regain the nation's independence and strengthen universal liberties! Fervent and dauntless, your militias crushed the better trained and equipped Russian armies at Raclawice, sending a message to all who dared to try and break the Polish spirit! Soon the people of the Commonwealth flocked to your banner, staging uprisings in Warsaw, Vilnius, and Greater Poland. Truly, your unflinching valour and great ability brought hope to all of Poland-Lithuania!

Bold Kosciuszko, your success was tragically cut short. Russian forces rained a deluge upon your armies, and soon you were captured, powerless to stop your nation from being absorbed by its neighbours. But Poland is not yet lost! Once more the people clamour for your aid! Will you throw off the shackles of your enemies and lead Poland-Lithuania to an age of liberty? Will you build a civilization to stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "I welcome you to Poland-Lithuania. I have pledged my life to my country, for liberty, and for equality. If you can accept that, I'm sure we'll get along swimmingly."

Introduction: "Welcome to Poland-Lithuania. I am Kosciuszko, its leader, but make no mistake. I have sworn not to use my powers to oppress any person, just to defend my country and the principles of international liberty!"

Defeat: "I may be defeated today, but as long as hope remains in the hearts of my people the country will never die! Poland is not yet lost!"
