Overview[]

Plymouth Colony[]

Plymouth Colony, known best as the land of the Pilgrim Fathers, was the second successful English attempt at colonising North America, after Virginia in the south. Contrary to the former, it consisted mainly of Puritans fleeing religious persecution rather than Entrepreneurs. This gave the colony a very distinct personality that has long captured people's imagination, often during Postprandial somnolence after Thanksgiving dinner.

John Carver[]

Little is known about John Carver's early life, but he was one of the puritans to decamp to Leiden during the first Brownist Emigration. There he rose to the level of Deacon after becoming very involved with the local church. Carver was one of the first to start negotiating with the Merchant Adventurers who would help fund the Mayflower voyage.

During the long voyage over, Carter was elected to be the governor of the new colony, and began trying to plan for when the puritans landed. Many were concerned about the legality of the colony given they hadn't aquired a land patent before embarking, so Carver helped draft out the famous Mayflower compact, which he became the first signatory of.

It was a very bumpy first start for the Colony, but Carver was able to hold things together long enough for them to see Spring, where he brokered a treaty of mutual protection with Chief Massasoit of the Wampanoag. This deal would last 50 years, but sadly Carver would not live to see it seen through, for he entered a coma and died later that spring.

Dawn of Man[]

"Hail, John Carver, creator of the Mayflower compact and founder of Plymouth Colony! After persecution in their home country, the right-thinking Puritans needed a strong guiding hand to lead them to prosperity in the New World. Who else but you? You had the perseverence to lead your people across stormy seas and see them safely ashore. The settlements you founded would grow and prosper even after you ceased being a governor, ensuring they would last until the present day, gracing the shores of Cape Cod. Plymouth regrettably saw friction with the native Wampanoag people, but you saw the benefits of maintaining positive relations, allying with the Abenaki people and learning how to cultivate the new foodstuffs offered by this strange land.

The pilgrims are persecuted once again, oh governor. They seek a new lease of life and faith and it falls to you to guide them on their journey. Will you establish footholds in lands across the ocean? Will you let those lands grow and prosper as havens of free religion? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "Salutations traveller! Welcome to our humble colony. Make yourself at home, but dare ye not attempt any sinful nonsense."

Defeat: "Alas, you could not tolerate our faith. Do not think we are so easily ground down, for we will rebuild again in another land, mark my words."
