Papua New Guinea[]
Papua New Guinea, officially the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, is a country in Oceania that comprises the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and its offshore islands in Melanesia. Split in the 1880s between German New Guinea in the North and the British Territory of Papua in the South, all of present-day Papua New Guinea came under Australian control following World War I, with the legally distinct Territory of New Guinea being established out of the former German colony as a League of Nations mandate. The nation was the site of fierce fighting during the New Guinea campaign of World War II. Papua New Guinea became an independent Commonwealth realm in 1975 with Elizabeth II as its Queen. There are 840 known languages of Papua New Guinea, making it the most linguistically diverse country in the world.
Michael Somare[]
Sir Michael Thomas Somare was a Papua New Guinean politician. Widely called the "father of the nation", he was the first Prime Minister after independence. At the time of his death, Somare was also the longest-serving prime minister, having been in office for 17 years over three separate terms: from 1975 to 1980; from 1982 to 1985; and from 2002 to 2011. He was a founding member of the Pangu Party which led PNG into independence in 1975.

From the island of New Britain in New Guinea, you joined the civil service and joined the Bully Beef Club, a group of nationalists from which you joined with to help found the Pangu party. Leading them to electoral victory and then independence. On 16 September 1975, your country awoke, free to choose its own destiny. From independence, you were prime minister from 1975 to 1980, 1982 to 1985, 2002 to 2010, and in 2011. In this role, you oversaw the development of the most culturally and linguistically diverse country in the world.
Oh gallant Michael Somare, you have guided your country for so long, and your country needs direction once more. There are new challenges to face, new trials to overcome. You have to protect the standing of Papua New Guinea, as you have done for so long. Can you build a Papua New Guinea of the future? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?
