The Otomo Clan led by Otomo Sorin is a custom civilization by DuskJockey, with contributions from Relic and DarthKyofu.
This mod requires Brave New World.
Overview[]
Otomo[]
The Otomo Clan was a Japanese noble family originating from Bungo Province, in modern-day Oita Prefecture. During the Sengoku Jidai, the Otomo were especially notable as one of the first clans to make contact and trade with Europeans. The Otomo struggled for control over Kyushu with the neigboring Shimazu and Mori clans, and retained their domains into the Edo period.
Otomo Sorin[]
Otomo Sorin, also known as Fujiwara no Yoshishige and Otomo Yoshishige, was a Japanese feudal lord of the Otomo clan, one of the few to have converted to Roman Catholicism. The eldest son of Otomo Yoshiaki, he inherited the Funai Domain, on Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island, from his father. He is perhaps most significant for having appealed to Toyotomi Hideyoshi to intervene in Kyushu against the Shimazu clan, thus spurring Hideyoshi's Kyushu Campaign of 1587.
Dawn of Man[]
Blessings be upon you Otomo Sorin, daimyo of the Otomo clan. Inheriting the Funai Domain from your father, you became one of the few daimyo to convert to Roman Catholicism. However, your wife, Lady Nata, the Jezebel, spent much of her political will actively resisting the Jesuit missionaries which you fostered relationships with and referred to you as King of Bungo. These missionaries included Francis Xavier. Advised by the Jesuit counsellors, you divorce your wife. Throughout this time, you also sent missions to Goa and Rome. Your reign was also defined by conflict, both with the Mori and the Shimazu. It was your appeal to Toyotomi Hideyoshi to aid in you holding back the Shimazu, that prompted his Kyushu campaign. Hideyoshi took over the entire island with your help, with you voluntary entering his service in your last few years.

Otomo Sorin, use your adept political skill to once again rise amongst the ranks of the daimyo. Load your cannons, the destroyers of provinces, and rise against those who would oppose you. Protect your people, and fight for your beliefs against those who refuse to accept. Will you restore your family domain in Funai? Can you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?
Introduction: Welcome to the lands of the Otomo clan, traveler. I, Otomo Sorin, would be most pleased to see what you have to offer us.
Defeat: I go now to give a full account of my deeds before God. I pray that you may be next.

Strategy[]

Otomo is a religious civilization spiced with some thematic benefits towards both Domination and Science victories. Their Unique Ability, Tensho Embassy, ensures that religion will play an important part in your strategy, whether you are proactive about it or not. As the founder of a religion (or as a zealous convert) your proselytizing will perpetuate itself, as your active Missionaries and Trade Units in other civilizations will contribute to your Faith per turn. If you are a more passive recipient of the good word, foreign Traders and Missionaries within your own borders will increase your Science yield.
Further to this, adopting a religion in any of your cities for the first time grants a free contemporary siege unit. This may include Otomo's first Unique Unit, the Kunikuzushi - a powerful Cannon replacement that gains a 33% bonus increase in strength when fighting on Otomo's home continent. Building one of these units is normally more expensive than the Cannon, but your total Gold and Science income from your Trade Routes will lower the Production cost significantly.
Finally, the Otomo Shisetsudan is a unique replacement for the Missionary. Otomo's high Faith focus from its UA will ensure a healthy supply of this unit which gains extra sight and movement when crossing water tiles, and yields an amount of Science equal to the yield of your Capital upon being expended.
