New Netherland[]
New Netherland was a 17th century Dutch colony on the eastern coast of North America in parts of what is now the American states of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Connecticut, and their surrounds. The colony was set up by the Dutch West India Company to capitalise on the North America fur trade, following French and English efforts to do the same. Dutch settlement began as early as 1613 with New Netherland becoming a province of the Dutch Republic in 1624.
The colony was slow to expand at first due to company mismanagement, includng an unwanted conflict between Lenape and other Algonquian tribes in the 1640s, and also due to the nearby colonies of Sweden and England. Expansion sped up in the 1650s, but the colony fell into English hands following the Second Anglo-Dutch war in the 1660s, with the Dutch only briefly taking it back in the Third Anglo-Dutch war in the 1670s.
Peter Stuyvesant[]
Stuyvesant was the director-general of New Netherland from 1647 to 1664 (when it was ceded to the English). He followed the fairly disasterous leadership of Willem Kieft, under which much of the population had left the colony.
Stuyvesant did much to expand the colony both in land and infrastructure, expanding south and taking over the New Sweden colony in 1655, and building schools and fortifications for New Amsterdam. He was also known for his religious intolerance, and came into conflict often with Lutherans, Jews, Catholics, and Quakers, doing his best to dissuade them from coming to or staying in the colony, principally by stopping the building of their houses of worship.
Upon the annexation of the colony by the English, Stuyveant continued to live in the then English colony of New York until his death in 1672. Due to his role in the development of what is now New York City, many places in the city are named after him.
