Dutch Brazil (Dutch: Nederlands-Brazilië), also known as New Holland (Dutch: Nieuw-Holland), was a colony of the Dutch Republic in the northeastern portion of modern-day Brazil, controlled from 1630 to 1654 during Dutch colonization of the Americas. The main cities of the colony were the capital Mauritsstad (today part of Recife), Frederikstadt (João Pessoa), Nieuw Amsterdam (Natal), Saint Louis (São Luís), São Cristóvão, Fort Schoonenborch (Fortaleza), Sirinhaém, and Olinda.
Johan Maurits[]
Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen was governor of Dutch Brazil from 1637-1643, as well as Count and later Prince of Nassau-Siegen. Known as the Brazilian, he served as Herrenmeister in the Order of Saint John (Bailiwick of Brandenburg) from 1652 until his death in 1679.

Look sharp, Johan Maurits, Governor of Dutch Brazil, Prince of Nassau-Siegen, Herrenmeister of the Johanniter Order. As Governor of Dutch Brazil, you battled the Spanish, extending the Dutch possessions in Brazil from Sergipe in the south to São Luís de Maranhão in the north. You transformed Recife into a beautiful town, using the loot from your expeditions and proceeds from German estates to adorn the town with public buildings, bridges, channels, and gardens, renaming it Mauritsstad. With this, you brought the colony into a flourish condition, inspiring art and poetry. Becoming known as the Brazilian for your works as governor, upon returning to Europe you were appointed to the command of the cavalry in the Dutch army, accepting later positions in Cleves, Mark and Ravensberg, and Minden, leaving a large legacy in both the Netherlands and Brazil.
Oh venturesome Johan Maurits, the time has come for another adventure. Seize control of your own destiny, free from the constraints of the Dutch West India Company, and build a new order, a new civilization to be marveled at. Can you link the world and be a cosmopolitan leader in a new world? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?
