Overview[]
Negros[]
The Republic of Negros was a short lived revolutionary republic established on the Philippine island of Negros, Visayas at the tail end of the 19th century. On November 5th, 1898, the Negrenses led by local sugar baron Aniceto Lacson y Ledesma rose in revolt against the Spanish authorities, marching to the capital of Bacolod and surrounding the city with imitation cannons and rifles made of bamboo. Fooled into thinking the rebels were in far greater than their actual number, the Spaniards agreed to surrender without a fight. From there revolutionaries established their provisional republic, which would last until the following year with the arrival of the Americans.
Aniceto Lacson[]
Aniceto Lacson y Ledesma was a Filipino revolutionary general, sugar baron, and businessman. The fifth of seven children, his family migrated to the island of Negros when he was still a child. He studied commerce at the Ateneo Municipal de Manila along with classmates such as Juan Araneta and José Rizal, where he met several important figures of the Katipunan and forged a secret blood compact with Andrés Bonifacio. Lacson led the revolutionary forces in their takeover of Negros in November, 1898, and ruled as President until March of 1899.
Dawn of Man[]
Greetings, Your Excellency - Aniceto Lacson y Ledesma, sugar baron turned President of the revolutionary Republic of Negros. Under the careful administration of businessmen such as yourself, the island of Negros became a wealthy and prosperous region of the Spanish Philippines. As the Tagalog Katipuneros began their uprising in the closing years of the 19th century, sympathy for their cause began to spread among the sugar planters. By 1898 you had joined the Katipuneran and were marching to the city of Bacolod, bluffing the garrison with decoy artillery and bringing Spanish rule in Negros to an end. Your Republic of Negros would last until the arrival of the Americans the following year.

Strategy[]

Negros is a Gold-oriented civ focused on expansion, cultivation and exploitation of the local surroundings. Their Unique Ability, Utod, helps with the former by granting Siege Units a mighty +30% Ranged Strength bonus for each adjacent Siege Unit that has not yet set up for its attack. Strategic use of this ability with a handful of Catapults can shred cities by peeking a single Catapult within range of the city, setting it up, and safely supporting it with rear-line Catapults pouring in their bonuses.
Utod also assists expansion by shaving off a considerable Gold cost from purchasing tiles, depending on the number of Luxury Resources the city is working. This effect stacks from up to six Luxury Resources, so working the maximum number can net you tiles for as little as 10 or even 5 Gold. To get more Luxury Resources to exploit this effect, hold off on chopping Forest and Jungle until the advent of Gunpowder unlocks the Negrense Unique Unit.
The arrival of the Boloman signals the time to start ravaging the surrounding wilderness. A Boloman is capable of instantly removing Forest or Jungle, earning XP and sending Production to the nearest city when doing so. Bolomen can quickly level up outside of combat by leveling the terrain around you, and also have a chance of discovering Sugar beneath the thicket. Deforest your surroundings with Bolomen, reveal as much Sugar as possible, then use your discount tile purchasing to sweep it up and enjoy even further savings.
Sugar (as well as any other Luxury Resource) also makes valid on any adjacent flat tile the Negrense Unique Improvement, the Asyenda. Asyenda provide a considerable +4 Gold and +2 Food, but also Production towards any Siege Units built in their city. More land means more forest, which means more Sugar, which means more Asyenda, which will boost your Gold and Siege Unit production for even more expansion through commerce or conquest.
