Overview[]

Mycenae[]

Mycenaean Greece (or the Mycenaean civilization) was the last phase of the Bronze Age in Ancient Greece, spanning the period from approximately 1600–1100 BC. It represents the first advanced and distinctively Greek civilization in mainland Greece with its palatial states, urban organization, works of art, and writing system. The most prominent site was Mycenae, in the Argolid, after which the culture of this era is named. Other centers of power that emerged included Pylos, Tiryns, Midea in the Peloponnese, Orchomenos, Thebes, Athens in Central Greece and Iolcos in Thessaly. Mycenaean and Mycenaean-influenced settlements also appeared in Epirus, Macedonia, on islands in the Aegean Sea, on the coast of Asia Minor, the Levant, Cyprus and Italy. The Mycenaean Greeks introduced several innovations in the fields of engineering, architecture and military infrastructure, while trade over vast areas of the Mediterranean was essential for the Mycenaean economy. Their syllabic script, the Linear B, offers the first written records of the Indo-European Greek language, and their religion already included several deities that can also be found in the Olympic Pantheon.

Agamemnon[]

Agamemnon was - according to legend, at least - a great and powerful king of Mycenae. He was the son (or grandson) or King Atreus, along with King Menelaus of Sparta. After Atreus was murdered by his nephew Aegisthus (son of Thyestes), Agamemnon and Menelaus took refuge with Tyndareus, king of Sparta, whose daughters, Clytemnestra and Helen, they respectively married. By Clytemnestra, Agamemnon had a son, Orestes, and three daughters, Iphigeneia (Iphianassa), Electra (Laodice), and Chrysothemis. Menelaus succeeded Tyndareus, and Agamemnon recovered his father’s kingdom. It was from here that Agamemnon assembled a combined Greek army for war against Troy, following the kidnapping of his sister-in-law by the Trojan prince, Paris.

Dawn of Man[]

May Ares guide your spear and Athena your thoughts, oh brilliant Agamemnon, son of Atreus and shepherd of the Greek people! You are the king of Mycenae, a proud city at the centre of the civilised world. Since the time of great king Perseus, son of Zeus, Mycenae has held paramount amongst the Greek city states as a symbol of power and authority, qualities you embody second to none. With this gravitas, you summoned the leaders of Greece to war against the Trojans for the grievous sins of Paris, for which poets and bards would sing your praises for millenia to follow.

Oh wide-ruling Agamemnon, lord of men! Greece once again looks to Mycenae for guidance! The world grows darker, as Greece's foes grow their might. Will you once again heed their call, and lead your men and fellow kings into battle? Will you accept the will of the Gods? Will you build a civilisation that can stand the test of time?

Introduction: "I am Agamemnon - descendant of Zeus and shepherd of the Greek people. What manner of barbarian are you?"

Introduction: "Welcome to Mycenae, heart of the civilised world. Are you an ally to the Greeks?"

Defeat: "Death is a softer thing by far than tyranny."

Defeat: "We sent forth men to battle, but no such men returned - only their ashes."

Attacked: "By the sword you have done your work, and by the sword you shall die."

Declaration of War: "You have betrayed my people for the last time. We shall destroy you with the blessing of the Gods."
