Mrauk U led by Min Razagyi is a custom civilisation mod by EmeraldRange, with contributions from NopeCopter, JakeWalrusWhale and others.
This mod requires Brave New World.
Formation of Kingdom[]
In the beginning of the 14th century, the Bengal Sultanate grew in strength and expanded towards Arakan. During the reign of Min Hti of Launggret, Bengal invaded Arakan and took Chittagong. Shortly after, the collapse of the Bagan Empire in Burma led to a power vacuum with continuous raids between Bengal and Burmese forces.
During the reign of Nazir Shah of Bengal, Narameikhla of Launggret regained control of Arakan with assistance from Bengal. Because of this, Arakan was made into a sovereign vassal, and Narameinkhla ceded parts of the north to Bengal. In return, he was provided Islamic titles and access to Islamic gold dinar coins from Bengal.
Narameinkhla found the city of Mrauk U, which grew to fame from attracting European travelers and capturing the imagination of Portuguese adventerurers. Upon the death of Narameikhla, his son Min Khayi expanded the kingdom conquering Sandoway and Ramu. Tensions only grew with his success Ba Saw Phru who conquered Chittagong back with the help of Portuguese mercenaries. Despite clearly taking back lands formerly ceded to Bengal, the Sultan of Bengal merely let Bengal falter to preserve the vassal relationship. But by 1531, the new king of Arakan, Min Bin, formally broke off from the Bengal Sultanate.
Min Bin and the Golden Age[]
Min Bin's reign saw significant attacks from both the rising Taungoo dynasty under Tabinshwehti and from Bengal in the north. The attacks from the east proved more dangerous as Tabinshwehti took Sandoway in a war- though the city of Mrauk U proved too defended to even try. In contrast, the Raja of Twipra from the north was driven back with Min Bin taking the Islamic titles of his predecessors on his own accord after the reclamation of Chittagong.
Min Bin's rule unshered in a Golden Age of relative peace and increased prosperity for the Arakanese- as well as their ascendancy to the regional stage. Sandoway was reclaimed and Arakan remained independent during Bayinnaung explosive conquest of most of Southeast Asia.
Min Razagyi and Taungoo[]
Razagyi was born in the mid 16th century a couple years after the reign of his grandfather and legendary king of Mrauk in his own right, Min Bin- who had accured Chittagong from the dying Sur Empire. While the crowned passed rapidly between his uncles and cousin- the Mrauk U Kingdom remained stable and secure. The crown eventually came to his father Min Phalaung who had garnered a reputation for using Portuguese mercenaries to control the Bengal coastline from the Sundarbans to Sandoway
By 1597, the Taungoo Empire to the east that had failed to conquere Mrauk U during Min Bin's rule was collapsing. Raza took the opportunity and allied with the governor of the city of Taungoo to rebel against the weak Emperor in Bago. Arakanese forces reached Bago by April 1599 where they successfully seiged down the city with Taungoo rebel help. The accumulated wealth of the explosive conquests of the Taungoo empire were divided amongst the assailants. As Razagyi's son Khamaung Min left Bago after taking everything, he razed the city to deprive the area of manpower- including Bayinnaung's famous palace. On their way back, they attacked the Siamese troops who had come to seige Bago but found the city already destroyed. Razagyi then left the leader of the Portuguese mercenaries, Filipe de Brito, in charge of the garrison in Syriam.
From 1600 to 1603- the Kingdom controlled over a thousand miles of coastline from Sandwip in the Sundarbans to the tenative hold over Bago in the Gulf of Martaban. However, much of the continued enforcement of the rule was too reliant on Portuguese mercenaries. An emboldened Filipe de Brito revolted and establish himself as a colony under the Viceroy of Goa. He sent his son Khamung to seige the city but the Arakanese navy was ambushed near Cape Negrais, leading to the crown prince's capture. The Portuguese prevailed in the war and Razagyi then feared the loyalty of his other mercenaries. He killed Portuguese settlers in Dianga and attempted to give the Dutch fortifications and land- but was unsuccessful. In 1609, the Dianga Portuguese under Sebastian Tibao's lead took over Sandwip, with the help of Raza' brother Minsaw. Worse, Minsaw died in suspicious circumstances shortly after Tibao married his daughter.
Crisis of the Millenium[]
The end of Min Razagyi's reign saw the start of troubles as Portuguese mercenaries tried to carve out their own fiefdoms. While Khamaung Min reigned them in with greater local naval investments, mercenary rebellions were instead replaced with noble rebellions approaching the turn of the millennium according to the Arakanese calendar in 1638.
The monarch in 1638 mysteriously died, leading to several succession schemes leading to the governor of Laungyyet eventually taking the throne as Narapati. After two rebellions from Chittagong, Narapati decided to loot the city, destroying the city's importance as a trade centre, relocating citizens to Mrauk U and sparking tensions with foreign traders. With traders moving to western Bengali ports and famine caused by sudden overpopulation in Mrauk U, Narapati lost control of Chittagong for the last time in Arakanese history.
In 1666, the Mughals conquered Chittagong serving as a symbolic end to the decades of Arakanese crises. The kingdom was saved from further Mughal ambition after an internal Mughal conflict. Mrauk U continued as an independent with the help of these officials until the 18th century. However, in the late 18th century, the rise of the Konbaung Dynasty led to the conquest of the slowly weakening kingdom. King Bodawpaya of Konbaung took the holy Mahamuni Buddha after finally seiging down Mrauk U in 1784, ending the independent Arakanese kingdom.
Dawn of Man[]
O mighty Min Razagyi, Sultan Salim Shah of the Great Kingdom of Arakan, your reign brought unmatched glory to Mrauk U. Your family expanded from the Sundarbans to Sandoway, taking over trade with shrewd mercenary contracts. But, you, great king, broke kingdoms and shattered empires far beyond Arakan. By fire and sea, you turned Bago to ashes and sent the King of Siam scrambling. The thousand miles from Sandwip to Martaban was under your beck and command.

Leaderscreen by EmeraldRange
Alas my lord, the Portuguese muddied your achievements with their greed and opportunism. Will you come back to command the waves once more? Can your wisdom widen your diplomatic options again? Will you build a civilisation that can stand the test of time?
Introduction: ">Be honoured that you stand before Min Razagyi, Lord of Arakan and its waves. Speak wisely, lest you drown in our waters."
Defeat: "What a shame how far this has had to come- I can only warn you as an old man not to stir these ashes before the embers quell."
Attacked: "Do not mistake my courtesies for weakness- you will find none here, only dark horizons of smoke from your cities turning to ash by my cannon fire!"
