Overview[]
Mori[]
The Mori of Aki Province are a Japanese clan, most known for their rapid conquest of Western Japan under their 12th head, Mori Motonari. During the Sengoku Jidai, Motonari would lead the clan to victory over many of their surrounding enemies including the Ouchi, Amago, and Otomo clans. The Mori were particularly known for their naval prowess, owing to their strategic holdings along the Seto Inland Sea and their alliances with seafaring families such as the Murakami and Kobayakawa.
Mori Motonari[]
Mori Motonari was the 12th and most illustrious head of the Mori Clan. Due to the low prestige and precarious financial situation he inherited upon becoming daimyo, Motonari was nicknamed the "Beggar Prince" during his early reign. However, his critics would quickly be proven wrong as Motonari's diplomatic, strategic, and military prowess would outside that of any other general in the region, and under Motonari's leadership the Mori would come to utterly dominate Western Japan.
Dawn of Man[]
Blessings of the divine be upon you, Lord Mori Motonari, great Daimyo and head of the ancient Mori Clan! The Mori descended from Oe Hiromoto of the Kamakura period, but it was under your stewardship that the clan truly came to prominence. When you came to power, Aki Province was threatened on all sides by the neighboring Ouchi, Amago and Takeda clans. Through your careful strategy and cunning diplomacy, you were able to turn the tables on each of your enemies in turn, culminating in your legendary battle against the Ouchi on the sacred isle of Miyajima. Your glorious victory set the stage for the rise of your family, with the Mori becoming one of the most important clans in Western Japan.
Lord Mori, your people yearn to know your next ambition! Will you carve out an empire by land and by sea? Will you raise the Mori name from obscurity into the annals of history? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?
Introduction: Greetings to you, fellow warrior. I am Mori Motonari, of Aki. What will history say of our meeting?

Strategy[]
Mori Motonari is king of the coastline, with several versatile bonuses that enhance both Culture and combat. The Mori Unique Ability, The Three Arrows, helps secure your shores and establish beachheads by inflincting damage upon surrounding enemies when one of their units is killed along the coast. This means that defeating naval and embarked units can help clear out enemy land units, and picking off the weaker units Mori can quickly whittle away a large amphibious invasion force or clear a landing zone for a naval invasion of his own. The Three Arrows also allows for any embarked Mori Great People (except Generals and Admirals) to establish special Holy Sites on Coast, which yield Culture for every adjacent land tile. Narrow inlets, lakes, and archipelagos are the best way to make use of these powerful cultural tools.
The Mori unique unit is the Murakami Kobaya. This replacement for the Caravel sacrifices exploration potential in favor of coastal combat strength. The Murakami Kobaya can heal on the fly by beginning its turn on a naval tile improvement, including Mori's offshore Holy Sites. At the beginning of its turn, the Murakami Kobaya adds 10% to its combat strength for each adjacent land tile. Moor your Kobaya in coves and inlets, ideally with tile improvements where they can heal, and then launch them to intercept enemy vessels as they attempt to maneuver through coastal straits.
The final Mori unique component is the Hagiyaki Workshop. This Amphitheater replacement is well worth the investment as it provides one free Porcelain resource when it is completed. This provides Mori with additional Happiness as well as a unique trading asset. It is also worthwhile to buildd the Hagiyaki Workshop in your most attractive trading cities, as any incoming naval trade route will yield +1 Culture for Mori.
