Overview

Montenegro

Montenegro is a country in southeast Europe on the Adriatic coast of the Balkans. During the Early Medieval period, three principalities were located on the territory of modern-day Montenegro: Duklja, roughly corresponding to the southern half; Travunia, the west; and Rascia proper, the north. The Principality of Zeta emerged in the 14th and 15th centuries. The name Montenegro was first used to refer to the country in the late 15th century. After falling under Ottoman rule, Montenegro regained its independence in 1696 under the rule of the House of Petrović-Njegoš, first as a theocracy and later as a secular principality. Montenegro's independence was recognized by the Great Powers at the Congress of Berlin in 1878. In 1910, the country became a kingdom. After World War I, it became part of Yugoslavia. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia, the republics of Serbia and Montenegro together proclaimed a federation. Following the independence referendum held in May 2006, Montenegro declared its independence and the confederation peacefully dissolved.

Nikola I

Nikola I Petrović-Njegoš was the ruler of Montenegro from 1860 to 1918, reigning as prince from 1860 to 1910 and as the country's first and only king from 1910 to 1918.

Though raised in foreign lands your heart continued to beat in Montenegro, and when you returned you would go about the task of securing and improving it. Drafting the country's first constitution, writing some of its most beloved literature and music, and crucially expanding its borders. You never shied from action, and Montenegro would engage in war against greater empires multiple times in your reign. A Balkan Leonidas though you proved to be, you were also sure to secure your people's security through multiple marriages with the great houses of the day.
