Overview[]

Mogami[]

The Mogami clan was a noble Japanese family, descending from the Ashikaga branch of the Seiwa Genji and a cadet branch of the Shiba clan. They rose to prominence as Sengoku-period daimyos in Dewa Province under Mogami Kaneyori. Under Mogami Yoshiaki, they became powerful rulers, controlling the 570,000-koku Yamagata Domain at the beginning of the Edo Period. However, after Yoshiaki’s death, the clan was dispossessed in 1622, and their descendants were reduced to 5,000 koku as direct retainers of the Tokugawa Shogunate. After the Meiji Restoration, the family became part of the samurai aristocracy,The Mogami clan was a branch family of the Shiba clan that belonged to the same family of the Ashikaga clan of Seiwa-Genji. It served as Ushu Tandai, the supervisors for the civil government and military affairs in Mutsu Province, and became daimyo of Dewa Province later.

Mogami Yoshiaki[]

Mogami Yoshiaki, the "Fox of Dewa," was a Sengoku and early Edo period daimyo of the Yamagata Domain in Dewa Province. The uncle of Date Masamune through his sister Yoshihime, Yoshiaki developed Yamagata's castle town, laying the foundation for the modern city. He improved navigation on the Mogami River, connecting inland areas to the Sea of Japan and fostering cultural exchange with Kyoto and Osaka. His irrigation and dam-building projects, including those at Kitadaseki and Inabazeki, boosted rice cultivation in the Shonai plain, contributing to the region's prosperity.

Hail, Mogami Yoshiaki, the Fox of Dewa, daimyo of Yamagata. From the Mogami clan, you inherited clan leadership from your father, and immediately saw your leadership challenged by vassals. When Toyotomi Hideyoshi came to power and forbade wars between daimyo, you sent your daughter Komahime to be the concubine of his nephew, Toyotomi Hidetsugu. But when Hidetsugu was accused of treason, Komahime was beheaded despite your pleas. Turning to Tokugawa Ieyasu, you became his strongest supporter, and in the coming wars you fought the Toyotomi-supporting Uesugi clan on the Sekigahara Campaign, successfully defending Kaminoyama Castle and drawing in Uesugi forces, until Ieyasu's main forces were victorious. For your loyalty, you were gifted lands and men. When returning home, you implemented a family law, rebuilt pagodas, and built water infrastructure such as transportation and dams.

Oh daimyo Mogami Yoshiaki, your time has come once again. The world is divided once more. You must pick your friends carefully, for they will reward your loyalty. Can you build your clan from humble origins? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?

Introduction: I am Mogami Yoshiaki, the Fox of Dewa. You would be wise to treat this place with respect.

Defeat: I have failed my clan.

Strategy[]

Mogami

Mogami Yoshiaki leads his clan as a militaristic, growth and Production-focused civ suitable for any victory type. Yoshiaki's Unique Ability, Fox of Dewa, grants his Fresh Water tiles a bonus Production yield from the start of the game, making them useful City-boosting tiles even before they grant extra Food to Farms after discovering Civil Service. Before reaching this technology, it may be viable to temporarily build Mines over some of these tiles to maximize Production yield before later replacing them with Food-producing Farms. On the military side, Fox of Dewa's second clause grants a massive amount of Experience to any Mogami unit that captures a City-State, so make sure to use your most valuable units to make the final push into the city.

Mogami's Unique Unit is the Nagae-Yari, a replacement for the Pikeman. This unique anti-cavalry unit gains an extra line of promotions alongside Shock and Drill, which directly increase the combat strength of the Nagae-Yari. When a Nagae-Yari accepts the third tier of this line of promotions, it instantly upgrades into a Musketman and has its promotions reset allowing you to choose more suitable abilities, while keeping a bonus 50% strength against mounted units. Using a Nagae-Yari to capture a City-State will, thanks to Mogami's UA, grant a huge boost of Experience towards these special promotions.

The Mogami Unique Building is the Tameike, which replaces the Water Mill. Unlike the base building the Tameike may be constructed anywhere without any terrain requirements, meaning you may enhance any city with its base Food and Production yields. Furthermore, if the City does have a source of Fresh Water within two tiles - or is a former City-State - the City tile itself becomes a source of Fresh Water, granting extra Food to adjacent Farms and of course extra Production from the Mogami UA, while also allowing for the construction of usually unavailable buildings such as the Garden.
