Civilization V Customisation Wiki

Manchukuo, also known as the Empire of (Great) Manchuria, led by Puyi is a custom civilization by PorkBean, with contributions from DarthKyofu, Senshi, and others. It is part of Dark Days as well as the Rebellions and Failed States series.

This mod requires Brave New World.

Overview[]

Manchukuo[]

Manchukuo, officially the Empire of Great Manchuria, was a Japanese-controlled puppet state carved out of the northeast regions of China during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Both a breadbasket and an industrial hub of the Japanese Empire, Manchukuo was integral to fueling the Japanese war machine as it expanded across Asia. Though nominally ruled by the last Qing Emperor, Puyi, true power remained with the Kwangtung Army and militarists within the cabinet.

Puyi[]

Aisin Gioro Puyi was the eleventh and final Qing Emperor, reigning from 1908 to 1912 as the Xuantong Emperor. Losing power after the Xinhai Revolution, Puyi spent several years effectively as a captive, first in the Forbidden City and later in the Japanese concession in Tianjin. After their invasion of Manchuria, Puyi was brought in by the imperial Japanese Army to serve as the Emperor of their nominally independent buffer state, Manchukuo.

"All Manchuria kowtows before you, Aisin Gioro Puyi, the noble Kangde Emperor of Manchukuo! You ascended to the Qing throne at just two years old, moments before revolution swept through China and brought an end to two millennia of imperial rule. Though the Empire fell, you would remain, cloistered within the Forbidden City, until even that final refuge was torn from your grasp. Exiled and without a throne, you fled to the protection of the Japanese, who installed you once again as Emperor of their puppet state, Manchukuo. Thirteen years into your reign, Japan was defeated, and your realm collapsed for a final time. Captured by the Soviets and later repatriated to China, you would live out your final years as a humble gardener and reformed citizen of the new Communist state.

Great Puyi, the people of Manchuria yearn again to be united into an independent Empire! Can you and your benefactors reignite the prosperity of your home? Can you bring about the age of a great and stable Manchuria? Can you build an empire that will stand the test of time?"

Introduction: I am the Kangde Emperor, sole ruler of the Empire of Manchuria. I have come here of my own free will, as demanded by my people.

Introduction: I am Puyi, Emperor of Manchukuo. Here, we are building a peaceful paradise of the Kingly Way.

Defeat: You are completely correct to defeat me; I would never have opposed you had I not been forced to.

Defeat: I hope you will accept the humble apologies of this former emperor.

Strategy[]

Manchukuo

The puppet state of Manchukuo benefits from pleasing its colonial overlord - in the case of Civ 5, this means following your friends and allies wherever they lead. The Manchukuo Unique Ability, The Kingly Way, offers a strong Production boost for all your cities whenever you adopt a Social Policy already adopted by a Declared Friend - check which branches your friends have opened in the Diplomacy Overview, and choose policies from the branches they are the most committed to. If you're finding it difficult to forge alliances, soften them up with generous trades of Strategic Resources; not only will this develop your relationship, but each copy of a Strategic Resource being exported reduces the cost of adopting Social Policies by a small amount.

Manchukuo's Unique Unit is the Type 94 Tankette, replacing the regular Tank. This small reconnaissance tank may choose Promotions normally only available to the Scout. Owing to its light armor plating, the Type 94 is highly effective against Gunpowder Units such as the Infantry and Great War Infantry, but suffers a penalty when fighting other Armor Units on equal footing. Choose targets for expansion that lack Armor Units in sufficient enough numbers to face you - if you have more than your opponent, the Type 94 may perform an additional attack.

The Manchukuo Unique Building is the Shale Plant, returning from Civ 4. This Industrial Era building replaces the Factory, and initially provides a bonus 10% Production to the training of Armor Units (allowing you to outproduce your opponents and maintain the Type 94's additional attack bonus). After unlocking the Shale Plant, quickly beeline Biology on the tech tree, as after researching it the Shale Plant will begin to output two Oil resources as an additional bonus - effectively converting one Coal into two Oil. This Oil can be used to fuel auxilliary units for your war machine such as aircraft, or can be traded away to further reduce the cost of adopting Social Policies.
