Overview[]

Malacca[]

The Malaccan Sultanate was founded in 1400 by Parameswara, a King of Singapore who decided to establish a kingdom in a village he had fled to. Quickly, he initiated development of the village and laid the foundation of a trade port and soon Malacca became known as a center of trade in the eastern world. Trade blossomed with merchants from places such as Arabia, India, and Persia, and, most notably, China coming over to establish bases in the growing town. The strong trade also led envoys to go to and from China, strengthening the relationship between the two and giving Malacca diplomatic protection. During the reign of the third ruler, Raja Tengah, a muslim ulama came to spread the teachings of Islam to the kingdom, leading to Raja Tengah to convert, adopt the name Muhammad Shah, and introduced Islam into his administration. Muhammad Shah also created the Undang-Undang Laut Melaka, or the Maritime Laws of Malacca, to regulate the increasingly important internation trade center. Malacca's strong economy allowed it to create strong military and navy to defend itself and deter attackers. Such as in 1446 when Ayutthaya launched an attack in which a chief named Tun Perak led the Malaccans to victory, he then soon followed that with a victory at sea in 1456 and served as a Bendahara, a rank similar to prime minister, to four sultans from 1456 to 1498, with his death signifying what is widely held as the beginning of the Sultanate's decline. Malacca reached its golden age under the rule of Mansur Shah who ruled from 1459 to 1477. Mansur Shah greatly expanded the borders of the Sultanate to encompass Southern Thailand and Eastern Sumatra. The Malaccan military became the strongest in the region, able to defeat the enemies of the Sultanate as well as pressure other kingdoms, such as the declining Majapahit kingdom, to give up land. Mansur Shah was also able to establish many tributaries and dependencies from nearby kingdoms.

The prosperity and golden age of Malacca as an internation center of trade and commerce continued until 1511 when the Portugese assaulted and captued the city and the Sultan was forced to flee. This marked the end of the Sultanate of Malacca. However, the last sultan did maintain control of Johor and founded a new Sultanate there. The Emporer of China, upon hearing of the capture of Malacca, began a decades long campaign against and persecution of the Portugese. The Portugese capture of the city also began the cities decline from being a major trading port. The Portugese had fundamentally disrupted the Asian trade network and the previously centralized port that was able to maintain safety for commercial traffic was replaced with a more scattered trade network of rivalling ports in the region. The Portugese had failed their ambition of dominating the Asian trade with their ending of the Malaccan Sultanate.

Mansur Shah[]

Mansur Shah, born 1442, became Sultan in 1459 while the Sultanate was experiencing prosperity. Mansur Shah had a much more expansionist policy than his predecessors and expanded the Sultanate greatly to cover the surrounding lands. He also continued to improve relations with the Chinese and was able to force tributary or dependency status on many nearby kingdoms. His conquests and diplomacy set the Sultanate to be the largest and most dominating power in the region by far. Mansur Shah's economic policies helped to increase the trade going through the strait even more and provided more safety and economic advantages to traders going through. He also orchestrated a number of diplomatic marriages to strengthen relationships with trade partners as well as to conquered states. Mansur Shah himself was married to a Chinese princess which further boosted relations with the Chinese and set the two nations as closer to allies or equal partners rather than the normal tributary status imposed by the Chinese on other nations. In 1477 Mansur Shah died and passed the throne to his son who continued to maintain the Malaccan prosperity and golden age.
