Overview[]

The Mahdist State[]

Mahdist Sudan, also known as the Mahdist State or the Sudanese Mahdiyya, was a state based on a religious and political movement launched in 1881 by Muhammad Ahmad, gaining its independence from the Khedivate of Egypt. Sudan's economy was destroyed during the Mahdist War and famine; war and disease reduced the population by half. The British reconquered the Sudan in 1898, ruling it after that in theory as a condominium with Egypt but in practice as a colony. However, remnants of the Mahdist State held out in Darfur until 1909.

Muhammad Ahmad[]

Muhammad Ahmad bin Abd Allah was a Sufi religious leader of the Samaniyya order in Sudan who, as a youth, studied Sunni Islam. In 1881, he claimed to be the Mahdi, leading a successful war against Ottoman-Egyptian military rule in Sudan, and the British in the Siege of Khartoum, establishing the Mahdist state, a vast Islamic state extending from the Red Sea to Central Africa. From his announcement of the Mahdiyya in June 1881 until 1898, the Mahdi's growing number of supporters, the Ansars, established many of its theological and political doctrines. After Muhammad Ahmad's unexpected death on 22 June 1885, his chief deputy, Abdallahi ibn Muhammad took over the administration of the nascent Mahdist state.

Dawn of Man[]

"Blessings be upon you, Mahdi Muhammad Ahmad, he who will battle al-Masih ad-Dajjal until the descent of the Prophet Isa. A teacher of the Quran of the lineage of Hasan, you and your believers constructed a great state in order to prepare for the Second Coming. This state, Mahdist Sudan, beat back the infidels, and with you as its teacher and leader, Mahdists Sudan built a national state for the oppressed peoples of the area. With your greatest victory, the capture of Khartoum, you had truly laid claim to the status of Mahdi. But your premature death left the state without a leader as charismatic and pious as you, oh devout Mahdi.

Holy Muhammad Ahmad, you have been called to serve once again. In an age of sin and vice, anarchy and chaos, you have been called to restore the world and prepare to fight al-Masih ad-Dajjal in preparation for the descent of Isa from Heaven. It will be a hard task, but it is one you must bear. Can you restore faith and prepare to defeat al-Masih ad-Dajjal? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "Blessings. Welcome to Mahdist Sudan, where we are destroying sin."

Defeat: "It was not to be. But know this. The word of Allah still rings true."
