This mod might require Brave New World.
Founding of Lanna[]
From the Tai states in the region, the local king of Ngoenyang, a small town on the banks of the Mekong, produced Mangrai. He became King of Ngoenyang at the age of 20 and quickly got to work to secure the Tai states against the looming Mongol threat. He conquered and allied with other small states around him to consolidate power and established himself the King of Lanna, and situated his capital in Chiang Rai, the City of Mangrai. In 1287, he acted as an intermediary between a personal conflict between King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai and King Ngam Muang of Phayao. The three kings decided to ally with each other to expel other claimants to the Northern Thai region out of the region. They also had hoped to take advantage of the Mongol invasions of Burma to seize the rich lowlands of Bagan for themselves. Ultimately, there were not able to do so personally but may have helped the Shan in their 1290 sack of Bagan.
Conquests and Consolidation[]
Mangrai turned his eyes towards the wealthy Mon kingdom of Hariphunchai centred on the rich city of Lamphun. With the alliance he forged to provide help, he uses cloak and dagger techniques to sow discontent and invade when the people had just forced the king of Hariphunchai to flee south to Lampang. He built the new city of Chiang Mai in this conquered land to serve as a new capital and centre for Northern Thai people. With another defensive war, Mangrai was able to consolidate more of Hariphunchai, taking over Lampang as well. Within his life, Mangrai succeeded in creating an empire to match its neighbours out of a tiny, unimportant kingdom. When King Mengrai died at the ripe old age of 73, Lanna entered a succession crisis, with 6 kings ruling with eleven years. It eventually stabilised with Mangrai's grandson Pha Yu, who solidified Chiang Mai as the capital of the new Lanna Kingdom.
Pha Yu was succeededpeacefully, who ushered Lanna into a centre for Theravada Buddhism. He established a grand stupa in Doi Suthep and promoted the Lnakawongse sect with Sukhothai to replace the Mon Theravada sangha they inherited from Haripunchai. Lanna's power grew steadily as the peace passed from Kue Na to Saenmuengma. However, Saenmuengma's uncle attempted a coup with the support and aid of Ayutthaya. This first armed conflict was largely inconsequential just as invasions from the new Ming Dynasty were to the king after Saenmuengma, Sam Fang Kaen. By Sam Fang Kaen's reign, Lanna had become a strong and stable regional power able to easily hold off invasions from far larger powers through the defensive positions of the hills.
Tilokarrat and Lanna's decline[]
Tilokkarat, seized the throne in 1441 for himself. Tilokkarat's brother took the violent secession as an opportunity to reclaim the throne for himself. He sought Ayutthaya's support and started the Ayutthaya-Lan Na War. Ayutthaya sent troops but was repelled and suppressed. The growing power of Ayutthaya worsened relations between Ayutthaya and Lanna. Especially as Tilokkarat began expanding Lanna for the first time in a long time. In 1456, Tilokkarat conquered the nearby Kingdom of Payao and in 1451, a Sukhothai royal gave himself in to Tilokkarat after a conflict with the king of Ayutthaya. With this, Tilokkarat invaded Phitsanulok to claim it from Ayutthaya. Although Tilokkarat was successful in conquering part of Sukhothai, Lanna suffered setbacks and had to settle for only part of the land.
Tilokkarat's glorious conquests were short-lived as Lanna returned to the squabbles of the Tai princes. In his fight with Ayutthaya, Tilokkarat had garnered and incorporated many Shan states into an alliance. Once the war had dissolved and Tilokkarat had passed away, they broke themselves off and used their newfound power to focus on the crumbling Ava Dynasty in Burma. By 1507, Lanna was unable to successfully launch offensives against Ayutthaya and found itself losing lands and cities by 1513.A dynastic struggle between Kengtung brought Lanna into a war with the Shan state of Hsipaw. The losses that Lanna sustained were so tremendous it destroyed the dominance that Lanna had built. Combined with more stability crises within Lanna in 1545 practically invited Ayutthaya to attack.
In 1546, Chiraprapha succeeded to the throne of Lanna as queen regnant on behalf of her underage son. The declining power of Lanna made it nearly impossible to resist the Ayutthayan conquest of southern Lanna holdings. Chiraprapha gave the throne to her nephew, the prince of Lan Xang to the east to save Lanna itself. This was Etthathirath, who later returned to Lan Xang when the situation stabilised, taking the Emerald Buddha with him. Mekuti, a Shan prince, was chosen to be the new king of Lanna, but being foreign, violated many norms.
Dawn of Man[]
Oh, Mighty King Mangrai, most cunning and clever King of a Million Fields of Rice. You are the glorious founder of Lanna, who from the small land of Ngoenyang, forged a mighty civilisation in the hills of northern Thailand. You foresaw the threat of the enemies surrounding the disunited Thai states and, through alliance and might, forged a mighty state to behold. Your Pact of Three Kings lay the groundwork for a lasting Thai state and your conquests of Hariphunchai solidified the Thai domination in coming centuries.
