Overview[]
Kuwait[]
Kuwait, officially the State of Kuwait, is one of the Arabic nations along the Persian gulf. Ruled by the House of al-Sabah, it first gained independence from the Ottomans under Mubarak al-Sabah's guidance, only to then be put under a protectorate status by the British. Partly because of this, Kuwait grew prosperous under the reign of Mubarak al-Sabah. Although Mubarak had supported the British, his successor would later support the Ottomans, especially during World War I. During Salim's reign, Kuwait entered into many conflicts, and during the post-war depression Kuwait's status greatly deteriorated. Further, while pearling was a historic source of Kuwait's wealth, Japan had figured out a way to cultivate pearls, greatly hindering Kuwait's economy. The poverty was immense, and it took until 1938 when oil was first discovered in Kuwait for things to change. Following the discovery of oil, Kuwait's new export brought them great prosperity and wealth, and in 1961 Kuwait became independent of Britain and the Sheikh established themselves officially as an Emir.
Mubarak al-Sabah[]
Originally, Mubarak was not the primary heir of the al-Sabah family. Mubarak first came to power with the assassination of his half-brothers, Muhammad and Jarrah. While it is believed that Mubarak had them assassinated, details of the assassination vary. Even details as to why he would do this vary, but in the end he took the title of Sheikhdom of Kuwait after the death of his predecessor. Afterwards, he acted to secure legitimacy for his reign, and was met with various success. Although hesitant, the Ottomans awarded him the title of kaymakam, a sub-governor of Kuwait under the Ottoman Empire. However, their hesitancy in giving Mubarak the title led him to find an alliance with the powerful British Empire. In pursuing a protectorate status with Great Britain, Kuwaiti developed as an important trading hub for the British, and Mubarak's power and influence grew immensely. He later launched an ambitious invasion of Najd, which had marginal success until the battle of Sarif in 1901. After that, Mubarak's reign mostly focused on increasing the sovereignty and prosperity of Kuwait and its people. Ottoman attitudes towards Mubarak began to change, as he was referred no longer as "kaymakam" but rather as "Ruler of Kuwait and Chief of its Tribes." During World War I, Mubarak allied with the British against hte Ottoman empire, before his death in November of 1915 due to Malaria.
