Overview

Kuban

The region of the Kuban was home to the Kuban Cossacks, descendants of different major groups of Cossacks who were re-settled to the western Northern Caucasus in the late 18th century. In 1918 a republic was proclaimed by the Kuban Rada on 28 January, which declared its independence on 16 February. It included the entire territory of the former Kuban Oblast of the Russian Empire. During its brief independence, it unsuccessfully sought union with the Ukrainian People's Republic. The Kuban People's Republic was de facto occupied by the forces of Anton Denikin on 6 November 1919, before being fully occupied and annexed by the Soviets in the spring of 1920. It was also known as Pink Ukraine.

Vasyl Ivanys

Vasyl Ivanys was born in Stanytsia Nastasivka, Temriutsk district, in the Kuban. He studied economics at the Moscow Commercial Institute and engineering at the Novocherkassk Polytechnical Institute from 1911 to 1915. After the February Revolution of 1917 Ivanys supported the Kuban faction that demanded independence for the region and had close ties with the Central Rada in Kyiv. He was a member of the Kuban Legislative Council from 1918, minister of trade and industry in 1919, and prime minister of the government of the Kuban People's Republic and acting otaman of the Kuban Cossack Host in 1920. As an émigré in Czechoslovakia Ivanys was one of the founders and later a professor of the Ukrainian Husbandry Academy in Poděbrady, then at the Ukrainian Technical and Husbandry Institute (UTHI) (1932–). He published extensively on the natural and industrial resources of Ukraine and Northern Caucasia, and several works on the Kuban, including a monograph on Kuban’s Struggle for Independence. In Canada from 1948, he played an active role in the Shevchenko Scientific Society and in the Brotherhood of Saint Volodymyr in Toronto. His memoirs, in five volumes, were published as Stezhkamy zhyttia.

Born in a cossack stanytsa deep in the heart of Kuban, you grew up immersed in the society of those proud warriors, and of the many rich cultures that called Kuban home -- Ukrainians, Russians, Caucasians, and more. When the Revolution came and the Russian Empire fell apart around you, you fought for Kuban's independence and prosperity, seeking to form an axis of anti-communist resistance that stretched from Ukraine to the Caucasus. But your grand strategy went unrealized, unappreciated by both the Ukrainian Hetmanate and the Russian State, the latter of whom sought to crush Kuban's independence before all were crushed by the Bolsheviks. Living your years in exile, you dedicated yourself to industry and economics, with your beloved Ukraine and Kuban always at the forefront of your writings. Stezhkamy zhyttia, your memoirs, would recount your life well-lived on the grand stage of history.

Mr. Ivanys, the people of Kuban once again need a wise leader to guide them. In this brave new world, the powers that emerge will try to pull Kuban in all directions, or crush it underheel. Can you forge mighty alliances and lead your cossacks to war against shared foes? Will you build a homeland in which culture can prosper? Will you build a civilization to stand the test of time?
