Overview[]
Japan[]
The Tokugawa, the last Shogunate of Japan, started off with an opportunity. After the death of Oda Nobunaga, Japan had a central government with nobody in power- an advantage that Tokugawa Ieyasu took. The Daimyo who supported Ieyasu's opportunism also found reward, and other vassals who supported Ieyasu were made Daimyos. Unlike previous shogunates, the Tokugawa had a very strict class system based upon one established by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The Daimyo were on top, followed by the Samurai, with other classes ranking further below. The Tokugawa persisted without any real opposition in Japan for well over a century, and this period became known as the Edo period.
Things were not all good for the Shogunate. In a dark age in Japan's history known as the Bakumatsu, Japan's isolationist policy of Sakoku was ended. Rapid modernization followed, and diplomatic relations were formed between Japan and western powers. Not all these changes were welcome, and many prominent Samurai and Daimyos gave their aid to an upstart Emperor, Meiji. In an event known as the Boshin War, the Shogun Yoshinobu was overthrown and Meiji restored the power of the Emperor. A common political belief was Sonno Joi, or to expel the barbarians from Japan- a Belief that clashed with the ideals of the Tokugawa. Thus, after the overthrow of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the young Meiji became the leader of Japan, albeit not without some early resistance.
Tokugawa Yoshinobu[]
Not much can be said about the man himself- despite strengthening the power of the Bakufu in the late period of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Yoshinobu's reforms came in too late to have any real effect. The Boshin War would lead to the rise of the Emperor, and Yoshinobu's lack of combat prowess became evident. On one such occasion, Yoshinobu ran away before an important battle.
Dawn of Man[]
Your presence is to behold, Shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu! Though a modest man, you inherited a country on the brink of collapse. With quick rationale, you implement various reforms in an effort to save your people from the grasps of war. However it was for not! Due to a treacherous ploy, you were drawn into war with the Empire of Japan, starting the process that would mean the end of the Shogunate. Despite support from the various Daimyos, your unwillingness to fight would prove to be your downfall. Truly, it was one of the most heinous travesties in the history of Japan.
Oh, befallen Tokugawa! Your supporters cry for a return to the traditional ways. Will you be able to revitalize the Samurai? Can you form strong alliances where they've once failed? Can you build a Civilization that can stand the test of time?
Introduction: The noble Tokugawa bows to their foreign visitors. My name is Tokugawa Yoshinobu, and you should find that we've plenty to learn from each other.
Introduction: Greeting, my name is Yoshinobu Tokugawa. We are grateful for your visit to our fine nation. Come enjoy some Jokisen tea- four cups should keep you up at night!
Defeat: It was a grave mistake to have ever approached the battlefield, especially with one as fierce as yourself. I'm not one to die right now, however. I accept my defeat.
