Overview[]

Japan[]

The Tokugawa Shogunate was the third and last of Japan's three shogunates, emerging out of the ferocity of the Warring States period. Eager to preserve the newfound peace, the shogunate limited the power of the local warlords and required them to spent periods of the year in Edo, the new military capital. With the nation pacified, the Edo Period was characterized by flourishing arts and culture, but also by technological stagnation and isolation that ultimately led to the downfall of the shogunate in the 19th century.

Tokugawa Ieyasu[]

Tokugawa Ieyasu was the last of Japan's Three Great Unifiers, and in many ways the ultimate victor of the Sengoku Period. Born Matsudaira Takechiyo in Mikawa Province, the future great general spent much of his early life being transferred around as a hostage between his larger neighbouring clans, the Oda and Imagawa. After the Battle of Okehazama and Oda Nobunaga's emergence as a powerful force, Ieyasu reasserted his control over Mikawa and went on to serve as one of Nobunaga's most loyal commanders. Waiting patiently during the reign of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and keeping his own troops out of the ill-fated invasion of Korea, Ieyasu re-emerged after Hideyoshi's death and went on to defeat Ishida Mitsunari at the Battle of Sekigahara, ending the era of warring states and at last establishing a unified government under his control.

Dawn of Man[]

Welcome, Tokugawa Ieyasu, honored Shogun of all Japan! Your journey began as lord of the Matsudaira Clan, nestled between larger powers in humble Mikawa Province. In a time of warlords and great ambitions, you learned to walk a path of patience and strategy. Emerging from the shadow of the Imagawa clan, you took the name Tokugawa and aligned yourself with the rising Oda Nobunaga, embarking on the unification of Japan that would later be achieved under the rule of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Ultimate victory would be yours, however, as the climactic Battle of Sekigahara cemented your rule and set the foundation for a new era of Japanese history.

Strategy[]

Tokugawa Icon

Tokugawa Ieyasu's at-last unified Japan is an Espionage-focused civilization, using its Spies to enforce the peace and bring yields to the Capital. Ieyasu's Unique Ability, Sankin-kotai, allows Spies to act as budget Courthouses in newly-occupied cities, removing the Occupied status and reducing any unhappiness penalties suffered as a result. Japan's Spies are always best placed in its own cities, as any friendly cities with a Spy will send Production to the Capital equivalent to its current Food output. Try to grow or conquer large cities with lots of arable farmland, then place Spies in those cities and turn Edo into a Wonder-producing powerhouse.

Ieyasu's Unique Unit is the Atakebune, a naval ranged unit that replaces the Frigate. Best in coastal waters, the Atakebune gains extra strength when at the mouth of a River, making it excellent for supporting land-based units as they make the crossing. Unlike the Frigate it does not require Iron, but keeping a store of Iron in reserve is useful as the Atakebune will automatically use it to augment its defense. Each reserve Iron adds +10% Defense, up to 100% from 10 Iron. Atakebune can serve as powerful coastal defensive platforms, especially near Rivers where they can shred enemies before suffering any significant damage themselves.

The Sake Den is Ieyasu's Unique Building, which replaces the Garden. In addition to normal effects, the Sake Den yields Happiness and Food, which supports the growth of cities and the potential Production yield to the Capital thanks to the Unique Ability. Furthermore, if the Sake Den is built in a captured Original Capital, Japan will be awarded an additional Spy - allowing Tokugawa to vastly outnumber defeated civs in terms of espionage capability. With Spies and Sake Dens in your largest Food-producing breadbaskets, Tokugawa's Capital can easily become capable of producing Wonders, units, or completing Projects in just a handful of turns.
