Overview[]
Japan[]
The islands of Japan are born of the unimaginable violence of plate tectonics, arising as the Pacific Plate is ground beneath the Eurasian Plate. The result is a mountainous land of great beauty and peril, where the people live and thrive in a narrow corridor between volcano and sea.
Jimmu[]
Emperor Jimmu was the first Emperor of Japan, according to legend. His accession is traditionally dated as 660 BC. According to Japanese mythology, he is a descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu, through her grandson Ninigi, as well as a descendant of the storm god Susanoo. He launched a military expedition from Hyuga near the Inland Sea, captured Yamato, and established this as his center of power. In modern Japan, Jimmu's accession is marked as National Foundation Day on February 11. Jimmu is recorded as Japan's first ruler in two early chronicles, Kojiki and Nihon Shoki.

"Legends tell of your great deeds, O' divine Emperor Jimmu. As descendant of Amaterasu, you were responsible for guiding your people eastward after the death of your brother, Itsuse no Mikoto. At the behest of Yatagarasu, the eight-span crow, you would lead them to Yamato, whereupon you would submit its ancient clans to your rule and establish an imperial dynasty. Thus would you confirm your legacy as the first emperor of Japan.
