Overview[]
Indonesia[]
The history of the 18,307 islands that comprise the Indonesian archipelago is actually that of hundreds of city-states, small kingdoms, and occasional empires. The first of which is thought to be the kingdom of Dvipantara mentioned in the Indian epic Ramayama, composed c. 200 BC. The last significant Hindu kingdom, the Majapahit Empire, unified most of the archipelago in the 13th century AD. There followed a succession of Islamic sultanates which dominated the major islands until the arrival of European explorers and traders. Known as the "Spice Islands" to the Europeans, lying astride trade routes between the Far East and the West, the Portuguese, Spanish, British and Dutch vied for control of the island chain until the Dutch East India Company came to rule Indonesia. Despite a four-year armed struggle for independence against the Dutch following the Second World War, and periods of unrest since, the country is now more stable, progressive and harmonious than ever, despite occasional outbreaks of sectarian and political violence. Reflecting the ethnic, religious, cultural and linguistic pluralism that resulted from this contentious past is Indonesia's national motto: Bhinneka Tunggal Ika ("Unity in Diversity").
Suharto[]
Suharto was a military officer and political leader who was president of Indonesia from 1967 to 1998. His three decades of uninterrupted rule gave Indonesia much-needed political stability and sustained economic growth, but his authoritarian regime finally fell victim to an economic downturn and its own internal corruption. A strong anti-Communist, Suharto drew Indonesia closer to the West and fostered in a period of substantial economic prosperity, but his tenure was plagued with negative publicity regarding suppression of opposition and serious human rights violations, particularly in East Timor.
Dawn of Man[]
"Hail to thee, Suharto, President of Indonesia! You rule over the modern nation of Indonesia, a vast, sprawling archipelago rich in culture, wealth, and resources. After thwarting a Communist coup, you rose from military general to the ruler of the nation. You brought political stability, rapid economic growth, and improved education to your fledgling independent nation. Despite accusations of growing corruption, military authoritarianism, and human rights abuses, your reign brought with it a great prosperity for almost thirty years!
Suharto, economic crises and a growing political activism would spell the end for your regime. But there are those in Indonesia who wish for a return to the old ways of the New Order! Will your governance once more bring prosperity to Indonesia? Will you build a civilization to stand the test of time?"
Introduction: "Welcome. This is Indonesia, and I am Suharto. Why are you here?"
Defeat: "...This is unfortunate."
