This mod requires Brave New World.

Overview[]

Imagawa[]

The Imagawa clan was a Japanese noble military clan that claimed descent from the Seiwa Genji by way of the Kawachi Genji. It was a branch of the Minamoto clan by the Ashikaga clan.

Imagawa Yoshimoto[]

Imagawa Yoshimoto was a pre-eminent daimyo in Sengoku period Japan. Based in Suruga Province he was one of the three daimyos that dominated the Tokaido region. He died in 1560 while marching to Kyoto to become Shogun. He was killed in the village of Dengakuhazama in Okehazama by Oda Nobunaga.

Dawn of Man[]

"Greetings, great Imagawa Yoshimoto, lord of the Imagawa clan! You led one of the pre-eminent clans of the early Sengoku period, custodians of the rich and fertile Suruga and Totomi provinces. As daimyo, you quickly became a respected diplomat and administrator. Under your administration, your capital of Sunpu grew into a prosperous cultural hub approaching even the court of Kyoto in its grandeur. You were renowned for your success in mediating and resolving disputes among feudal lords, solving issues without bloodshed and forging powerful alliances with your neigbours. While you were not a renowned military commander in your own right, your powerful and loyal army, successful commanders, and success in swaying minor daimyos to your side allowed you significant success in your conquests, expanding your domain to Mikawa and parts of Owari. Truly, your rule saw the Imagawa reach a position of prestige and prosperity rarely achieved by a simple clan!

Oh great daimyo, your bold march to Kyoto led to your shocking defeat and untimely death, and the legacy of your clan and your rule has been eclipsed by the rise of your vanquisher. But your great leadership is once more recognised, and you have the opportunity to lead the Imagawa on a new path of ascendancy! Will you triumph over your foes, by the quill or by the blade, and emerge as a leader all can follow? Will you build a civilization to stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "Hail, great leader! The humble Yoshimoto of the Imagawa clan greets you. Perhaps in this age of warfare, we are best off pursuing our interests together?"

Defeat: "You have bested me, great leader. I can only hope I am remembered for my achievements and not my military failure."

Strategy[]

Imagawa

Imagawa Yoshimoto leads a cultural and diplomatic civilization, with his military ambitions mostly contained within his Unique Ability. March to Kyoto grants Imagawa units incredible movement options in the opening turns of a war, unrestricted by enemy zones of control and receiving movement bonuses from roads in enemy territory. With careful planning, this ability will allow Imagawa to march right through weak front lines and make a beeline for the enemy capital, the capture of which transfers all of your enemy's influence with city-states to you. When aiming for a diplomatic victory, this gives Imagawa the option of direct action to attempt to halt rivals that are becoming too friendly with minor civs.

The Rengashi is a Unique Great Person, replacing the Great Writer. With no maintenance cost, Rengashi are best kept around to use all at once with any other expendable Great People. When they are finally used to write a Great Work or a Treatise, they produce 50 Culture for each previously expended Great Person on the current turn - this includes Generals, Admirals, Prophets, Scientists, Engineers, Merchants, Cultural Great People, and of course other Rengashi. When a decent number of Great People have been gathered, the best method is to expend Rengashi last in the chain to maximize cultural output.

With your Great People all standing around waiting to compose a poem they will need something to do, which is where the Mariba comes in. This Colosseum replacement generates +1 Culture by default, but having a Great Person idle in the city will passively generate influence with city-states of a particular type. The Great People and corresponding city-state types are as follows;

Icon
City-State Type
Great People
CS Mil White
Militaristic
  • Great General
CS Mar Murakami
Maritime
  • Great Admiral
  • Great Scientist
CS Mer White
Mercantile
  • Great Merchant
  • Great Engineer
CS Rel White
Religious
  • Great Prophet
CS Cul Peach
Cultured
  • Great Artist
  • Great Musician
  • Great Writer
  • Other Great People (modded)

Great Prophets are naturally the least likely to be hanging around, so religious city-states are the most difficult to gain influence with using the Mariba. This means any of your "normal" city-state ally-building should be with those, and the more common Great People can be used to influence the other types.
