The Iga Sokoku Ikki led by Momochi Tanba is a custom civilization by PorkBean and Homusubi, with contributions from DuskJockey, Senshi, Grant, and others.

Overview

Iga

The Iga Republic (Iga Sokoku Ikki) was a kind of peasant's republic, established by the ninja clans of Japan's Iga Province during the 16th Century. Early in the Muromachi period, the region successfully broke away from the wider feudal system and was organized independently under the Momochi, Hattori and Fujibayashi clans. In 1579, Oda Nobukatsu attempted to invade Iga to win favor with his father; the ninja ambushed Nobukatsu's army as they attempted to establish a foothold, and the invasion was successfully resisted. Two years later, Oda Nobunaga would invade the province from all directions and finally bring an end to the republic.

Momochi Tanba

Momochi Tanba is a name commonly associated with one of the three Iga ninja heads of the Sengoku period, along with Fujibayashi Nagato and Hattori Hanzo. His true name has not been verified; the name "Momochi Sandayu" appears to be an invention of the Edo period, and is derived from a term for "Clan Elder". Tanba often appears as "Tanba no Kami", and is speculated to refer to be a government rank or denotation of command of a fortification. In legend, he is best known as the teacher of Kirigakure Saizo and Ishikawa Goemon, and for defying the Oda clan during the Tensho Iga Wars.

Dawn of Man

Welcome, Momochi Tanba-no-kami, wise leader of the Iga Sokoku Ikki! A secluded land, Iga is surrounded on all sides by mountains and dense forests. As a result, no great warlord arose in the province during the Sengoku Jidai, and instead governance fell to a council of local nobles. In 1579, when the upstart Oda Nobukatsu launched an invasion of Iga seeking personal glory, your people used their knowledge of the terrain and experience with night warfare to launch a guerilla campaign against the young samurai. Nobukatsu's army was utterly routed, suffering constant ambush with losses numbering in the thousands. Though the Oda eventually returned to put an end to Iga's independence, the legend of the Iga shinobi would endure for centuries.

Strategy

Iga is an aggressive civ focused on gathering information and establishing control over each situation. Kishomon, the Iga Unique Ability, expands the utility of spies to fill a combat support role by granting Iga units within three tiles of their city completely free movement, ignoring enemy zone of control. This can be used either offensively or defensively, providing more movement options during the seige of an enemy city or a more versatile defensive strategy in home cities. Additionally, the Iga Unique Ability also doubles the movement of ranged units in forest and jungle tiles, allowing the player to hide large siege armies and units in vegetation before quickly moving to surround an enemy city.

The Shinobi is Iga's unique replacement for the Scout. Although weaker defensively, it is essentially a more powerful Archer with superior movement, as it is a ranged unit with 2 range unlike the Scout. The Shinobi can move after attacking and, as a ranged unit, it is also granted additional movement in forest and jungle from the Iga UA. A Shinobi can emerge from a forest, deal damage to an enemy unit, and withdraw before the end of its turn.

After researching the Guilds technology Iga has access to a unique improvement, the Kakurezato. This hidden village requires forest or jungle, and grants any unit that begins their turn on the tile +1 movement until the next time they engage in combat. During peacetime, prepare your army by cycling them onto your Kakurezato improvements so that when war comes, your units can quickly relocate to where they are needed or launch a surprise attack through rough terrain against an enemy city.
