In the late 800s, after the split of the Frankish Empire, the County of Holland was founded in Lotharingia under Count Gerolf of Holland, slowly expanding in the coming centuries through marriages and diplomacy. During the 12th and 13th centuries Holland expanded south to conquer Zeeland and West Friesland with these borders being roughly the full extent of the county for the next century and a half.

Throughout the 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries many reclamation efforts were made to expand the land and pushback the sea through the use of dikes, dams, and other water control systems. The 11th century saw the beginning of the Great Reclamation which saw large amounts of land reclamation and expanded Holland's influence. Following the Hook and Cod Wars in the 1400s, Philip, Duke of Burgundy, held control of the county. Under the Burgundians Holland experienced a growth in trade and population and Amsterdam became the primary trading port of the region. Soon after, the land became part of Spain.

As the Protestant reformation took hold in the Netherlands, a massive revolt against the Catholic Spanish and the Eighty Year's War, ended in Dutch independence. Holland, being the capital province of the new Dutch State became the face of the Netherlands, being the cultural, political, and economic center of the state. The Count of Holland formerly came to an end in 1795, and in 1840 Holland was split into North and South Holland under the United Kingdom of the Netherlands which is how it remains today.

Floris V[]

Floris V was born in 1254 and came to power 2 years later under a regent after his father was killed, this regency lasted until Floris was 12. Much of the 1270s was marred by uprisings of nobles, but by 1279 Floris V had managed to quell them. In 1282 Floris began his second campaign against the Frisians in the north of Holland, defeating them and managing to finally retrieve the body of his father. In 1287 Floris V recieved Zeeland as a loan from the Holy Roman Emperor, however the nobles sided with the count of Flanders who invaded in 1290. In 1292, Floris V fought back and successfully retook Zeeland. In 1296, Floris V switched allegiance from England to France following a trade dispute with the former, resulting in an English trade embargo and the successful kidnapping of Floris by the English and some Dutch nobles. During an attempt to move Floris to a more secure location, an angry group of peasants stopped the kdnappers, causing them to panic and end up killing Floris before fleeing. After his death the nobility began to insult Floris V by refering to him as "God of the Peasants", but this title instead helped Floris V become a symbolic hero for the peasants of Holland, even helping in the fight for independence against Spain in the Eighty Years' War.

Dawn of Man[]

Oh great Count Floris V, God of the Peasants, you led Holland through a period of growth and prosperity. You expanded your state, both against those around you, and against the sea. Your life was quickly marred with misfortune when at the age of two your father was slain. However, this did little to stop you as you ascended to the throne at the young age of twelve to effectively lead Holland, modernizing the administration, increasing trade, and fighting your enemies.

Sadly, the nobles of the land did not approve of your commitment to your people and tried to rebel quite a few times. Soon after your death many nobles mocked you by refering to you as "God of the Peasants", a name that would turn from a jeer to the name of a hero for Holland. Your legacy would live on through songs, plays, books, and ideas. Despite your tragic end, you would become a saint for the Hollander people, later becoming a symbol in the struggle for independence against Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Floris, can you once again take your place on the throne of Holland? Can you bring Holland into another era of prosperity? Can you call forth the will of the people and retake your position as God? Can you build an civilization that will stand the test of time?

Introduction: "Welkom to Holland! I've just come back from overlooking some dijk construction in the peat bogs just north of here. I was just about to travel to Amsterdam to negotiate some trade deals, care to join me?"

Defeat: "You won't get far with this! My people will rise against you and take their revenge from your tyrannical ways! This isn't the last you'll hear my name!"
