Overview[]

Hohokam[]

Hohokam was a civilization based in the Sonora Desert of the American Southwest, today known only from its material culture. It was an ancestor of the O'odham peoples, including the Tohono O'odham and Pima. The Hohokam people lived a sedentary, urbanized lifestyle, and famously maintained large systems of irrigation canals to sustain themselves. They were also vigorous traders who exchanged goods with the California region and Mesoamerica.

I'itoi[]

I'itoi (also known as I'ithi or Se:he, "Elder Brother") is a culture hero and creator god from O'odham mythology. He is credited with creating the Hohokam people, who he brought forth from the underworld. I'itoi was a warrior who killed enemies of the O'odham people, such as Eagleman; he also helped shape the landscape of the Sonora Desert.

I'itoi also gave his people the Himdag, a set of commandments that taught the O'odham and their ancestors how to interact with the world to get the most out of it and preserve the balance.

"Greetings, I'itoi, the Elder Brother, the Man in the Maze! As the man who first led the Hohokam people from the underworld and up to the surface, it is now your destiny to lead them. Following your Himdag commandments, the Hohokam established a vast network of immigration canals throughout the arid Sonora Desert, allowing them to build urbanized settlements within this harsh environment. They also fostered trade with the rich lands of Mesoamerica, providing not just new crops but also the turquoise with which you made your ornate jewelry. Eventually, drought would cause Hohokam to collapse and be supplanted by the modern O'odham peoples, but you still commanded the Sonora for almost 1500 years.

Elder Brother I'itoi, it is time to excavate your long-forgotten canals and become the master of the desert once more. Can you create an oasis empire that is the envy of all of your rivals? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "I am I'itoi, the Man in the Maze! I have taken these inhospitable lands and forged them into the triumphant cities you see here."

Defeat: "Such a great empire, dried up and turned to dust..."
