Overview[]

Great Britain[]

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a sovereign state in Europe. Lying off the north-western coast of the European mainland, the country includes the island of Great Britain—a term also applied loosely to refer to the whole country—the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland and many smaller islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK that shares a land border with another state (the Republic of Ireland).Apart from this land border, the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to its west and north, the North Sea to its east and the English Channel to its south. The Irish Sea lies between Great Britain and Ireland. The UK has an area of 93,800 square miles (243,000 km2), making it the 80th-largest sovereign state in the world and the 11th-largest in Europe.

Clement Attlee[]

Clement Richard Attlee was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1945 to 1951 and Leader of the Labour Party from 1935 to 1955. He was Deputy Prime Minister during the wartime coalition government under Winston Churchill, and served twice as Leader of the Opposition from 1935 to 1940 and from 1951 to 1955.

Attlee's election in 1945 was an unexpected twist to the wartime narrative of Churchill's success and popularity, but his legacy lies in his post-war policies for social improvement. Building from the Beveridge Report's conclusions on great societal flaws, Attlee's instituted reforms that would characterise the Labour party: council housing for the impoverished, a strengthening in labour union power, and the institution of the National Health Service.

Attlee's international policies also reflected this changed era, as his dismantling of the British Empire into a voluntary Commonwealth conceded that the economy could not support support such a burden and that improving the state of Britain for its citizens at home or anyone in the Commonwealth who wished to start a new life there.

Attlee is primarily remembered for his central role in presiding over the government that would create the NHS, which to this day serves as an important source of national identity, and for his role in rebuilding Britain after the Second World War. His premiership also saw the drastic withdrawal of Britain from large swathes of her overseas colonies, beginning the transition from Empire into Commonwealth. Although Attlee's government eventually waned after public opinion soured in the face of austerity measures forced on by the Korean War, Attlee's term is recognised today as a success for the working class and a beacon of hope that it is in fact possible for a politician to care for their public.

Dawn of Man[]

The sun sets on your empire, Clement Attlee, but this is no time for rest. Taking power in the turbulence of the greatest conflict the world had yet seen, your pledge to ease the pains of the British people resonated and your recognition of freedom as a right for Britian's colonies was both progressive and pragmatic. The success of your social welfare policies is such that they have become an iconic part of the British culture, and your committment to peace in the shadow of such a violent episode is admirable and gratuitously welcomed.

Prime Minister, suffering has befallen your public once more. Will you provide for the impoverished workers of Britain's industry, tending to their injuries and putting shelter over their heads? Will you recognise the right to self-determination that all people deserve, and extend your caring embrace to any who see Britian as the land of their hope and glory? Will you build a Civilization to stand the test of time?

Introduction: "Hello, fellow leader. Britain and her Commonwealth welcomes you with open arms."

Defeat: "It seems the sun has truly set, now. How unfortunate."

Nationalise the Services
Entrepreneurs are a crucial part of the economy, but there are cases where services are so important to society that entrusting them to private businesses would create too great a risk of failure and would require such expense from consumers to be profitable that they would become unusable. As such, the government should step in to run these operations at a loss and use other sources of income to balance the cost. This national level administration of public services is a risky endeavour but will improve the lives of our common citizens greatly.

Implement the Beveridge Report
Lord Beveridge's investigation into the suffering of the British people has been thorough, and though many of its recommendations regard a recalibration of the public attitudes and mentalities the government also sees an opportunity to help in the form of social security. Though it will be a costly endeavour to fund the working class in this manner, the safety net it offers will provide them a clearer mind to consider ways to grow.
