Overview[]

Genoa[]

In ancient times, what probably began as a Ligurian village on the Sarzano Hill overlooking the natural port (today Molo Vecchio) prospered through contacts with the Etruscans and the Greeks. As a flourishing Roman municipium it became a road junction, a military port, and a market of the Ligurians. After the fall of the Roman Empire, followed by invasions of Ostrogoths and Lombards, Genoa long existed in comparative obscurity as a fishing and agrarian centre with little trade. By the 10th century, however, the general demographic and economic upswing of Europe brought fresh opportunity and enabled the Genoese to answer the challenge of Muslim raids vigorously. A Fatimid fleet stormed and sacked the town (934 or 935), but the Genoese raised their walls anew and counterattacked under the leadership of their bishop and of the local viscounts. Soon, Genoese merchant ships were trading briskly in the western Mediterranean and calling at Palestinian seaports.

Simone Boccanegra[]

Simone Boccanegra was the first Doge of Genoa. He became doge in 1339, but was ousted from power six years later. He regained the position in 1356, retaining it until his death in 1363.

Dawn of Man[]

"Glory and wealth be upon you, Simone Boccanegra, first Doge of Genoa. A city of humble origins, over the course of nearly a millenium Genoa would rise to become one of the wealthiest and far-reaching of Italy's merchant republics. As Doge, you would oversee these beginnings, ushering in the rise of the republic's great merchant families. Though Napoleon would ultimately see to the end of the republic in 1805, the legacy of her indomitable control over the Mediterranean would ensure its lasting legacy. Noble leader, the elites of rival wealth have risen up once more to challenge your position at their head. You must take your own wealth and spread your power once more across the rich seas. Can you align yourself with the great merchant families of old? Can you take their wealth and fashion it into a prospering empire? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "Well, I've seen worse for wear. Greetings. I am Simone Boccanegra, ruler of Genoa. I hope you have gold."

Defeat: "A shame. I was starting to enjoy my fineries."
