Overview

Lombard League

The Lombard League was an alliance of medieval communes in northern Italy formed in 1167. Nominally, these cities were part of the Holy Roman Empire, though enjoying long periods of quasi-independence from the centre of Imperial power. As the Hohenstaufen dynasty of Holy Roman Emperors sought to reduce their autonomy by replacing their local magistrates with ones commissioned directly from the Emperor, many communes in northern Italy formed alliances to counter these attempts.

Guido da Landriano

Guido da Landriano was a condottiero and the consul of Milan, he held strong beliefs in Lomabard independance, and challenged HRE control in the area. During the battle of Siziano in 1159, when fighting against Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, he was captured and imprisoned in Pavia for some amount of time, being freed some point before late 1167. In December 1167, da Landriano (along with the Leaders of Lodi, Ferrara, Piacenza, and Parma) became a signatory to the Oath of Pontida, effectively marking the start of the Lombard League. In 1176 he helped lead the Lombards to victory against Barbarossa in the battle of Legnano, leading to his retreat from trying to dominate northern Italy and leading to the Peace of Constance which officially ended the war and recognised the Lombard League.

Hail, Guido da Landriano, hero of the Battle of Legnano! Rising to become the consul of Milan, you were imprisoned by the coward German Emperor Barbarossa after the Battle of Siziano. This imprisonment could not contain your warrior spirit and love for your people when in 1167 you signed the Oath of Pontida, forging the Lombard League with Lodi, Piacenza, Parma, and Ferrara. Supported by that most holy Vicar of Christ on Earth, Pope Alexander III, you expanded the League and led the struggle to free your people from the Hohenstaufen yoke, culminating in glorious victory at the Battle of Legnano and the signing of the Peace of Constance.

Great condottiero, the people of Lombardy once again clamour for freedom from the will of foreign powers. Your subjects fly your banners in face of the enemy. Will you assemble the cities of the ancient League? Can you once more forge an alliance to defend your lands? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?

Introduction: "Who is this that walks my halls? Welcome, stranger – come, let us make a meeting and discuss your communes joining my League."
