Overview[]

England[]

England is located on Great Britain, a "green and pleasant" island off of the western coast of Europe. It is the largest member of the political entity known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Historically a seafaring people, for much of the past 500 years the English have used their incomparable navy to project their power into Europe and across the globe.

Richard I[]

Richard I was King of England from 1189 until his death in 1199. He was the second king of the House of Plantagenet. He also ruled as Duke of Normandy, Aquitaine and Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, Count of Poitiers, Anjou, Maine, and Nantes, and was overlord of Brittany at various times during the same period. He was the third of five sons of King Henry II of England and Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine and seemed unlikely to become king, but all of his brothers except the youngest, John, predeceased their father. Richard is known as Richard Cœur de Lion or Richard the Lionheart because of his reputation as a great military leader and warrior.

By the age of 16, Richard had taken command of his own army, putting down rebellions in Poitou against his father. Richard was a central Christian commander during the Third Crusade, leading the campaign after the departure of Philip II of France and achieving considerable victories against his Muslim counterpart, Saladin, although he did not retake Jerusalem from Saladin.

Richard probably spoke both French and Occitan. He was born in England, where he spent his childhood; before becoming king, however, he lived most of his adult life in the Duchy of Aquitaine, in the southwest of France. Following his accession, he spent very little time, perhaps as little as six months, in England. Most of his life as king was spent on Crusade, in captivity, or actively defending his lands in France. Rather than regarding his kingdom as a responsibility requiring his presence as ruler, he has been perceived as preferring to use it merely as a source of revenue to support his armies.[5] Nevertheless, he was seen as a pious hero by his subjects. He remains one of the few kings of England remembered more commonly by his epithet than his regnal number, and is an enduring iconic figure both in England and in France.

Dawn of Man[]

Eternal glory to you, noble King Richard the Lionheart. You are the great crusader-king of England, about whom stories of chivalry and gallantry abound. Famed for your military mind, you took upon yourself the command of all the power that England had to offer, embarking across the seas upon the Third Crusade in a fabled quest to take back Jerusalem from the heathen Saladin. Though Jerusalem's victory would ultimately elude you, your military triumphs and pious ambitions would nonetheless earn you an exalted place amongst England's greatest kings.

Knightly lord, the divine order has been given once again. You have been given your birthright as king in the trust that you will heed its call. Can you take up command of the arms of England once again? Can you raise the banner of God in defense of His kingdom on earth? Can you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?

Introduction: "Strength of arm to you, friend! I am Richard, King of England. What purpose do you bring me?"

Defeat: "Shamed by this defeat, I shall return to my island kingdom."
