Overview[]

England[]

The Kingdom of England was a sovereign state on the island of Great Britain from 12 July 927, when it emerged from various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, until 1 May 1707, when it united with Scotland to form the Kingdom of Great Britain. The Kingdom of England was among the most powerful states in Europe during the medieval period.

On 12 July 927, the various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms were united by Æthelstan (r. 927–939) to form the Kingdom of England. In 1016, the kingdom became part of the North Sea Empire of Cnut the Great, a personal union between England, Denmark and Norway. The Norman conquest of England in 1066 led to the transfer of the English capital city and chief royal residence from the Anglo-Saxon one at Winchester to Westminster, and the City of London quickly established itself as England's largest and principal commercial centre.

Histories of the kingdom of England from the Norman conquest of 1066 conventionally distinguish periods named after successive ruling dynasties: Norman 1066–1154, Plantagenet 1154–1485, Tudor 1485–1603 and Stuart 1603–1707 (interrupted by the Interregnum of 1649–1660). Dynastically, all English monarchs after 1066 ultimately claim descent from the Normans; the distinction of the Plantagenets is merely conventional, beginning with Henry II (reigned 1154–1189) as from that time, the Angevin kings became "more English in nature"; the houses of Lancaster and York are both Plantagenet cadet branches, the Tudor dynasty claimed descent from Edward III via John Beaufort and James VI and I of the House of Stuart claimed descent from Henry VII via Margaret Tudor.

Edward I[]

Edward I, byname Edward Longshanks, (born June 17, 1239, Westminster, Middlesex, England—died July 7, 1307, Burgh by Sands, near Carlisle, Cumberland), son of Henry III and king of England in 1272–1307, during a period of rising national consciousness. He strengthened the crown and Parliament against the old feudal nobility. He subdued Wales, destroying its autonomy; and he sought (unsuccessfully) the conquest of Scotland. His reign is particularly noted for administrative efficiency and legal reform. He introduced a series of statutes that did much to strengthen the crown in the feudal hierarchy. His definition and emendation of English common law has earned him the name of the “English Justinian.”

Dawn of Man[]

Awaken once more Edward I, Hammer of the Scots! Very much the archetypal 'warrior king', you took the throne in a period of rising national consciousness and proceeded to assert the English dominance of the British Isles. Your reign was marked, perhaps more than any other, by long and costly wars that would have a profound effect on the psyche of the English people and their neighbours. These were not entire;ly without fruit though, you completed the subjugation of Wales and for a time claimed overlordship over Scotland, though the latter was not to hold.

Mighty Dragon! The English people once more yearn for a great and terrible king to lead them out of the darkness and into the future! Will you be able to bring order to the chaos of these lands, and unite them against external threats? Will you destroy all walls that bar your people from ascendancy? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?

Introduction: "Oh? Another new traveller in English lands? Welcome friend and let us discuss military innovations."

Defeat: "It seems in the end it was I who was crushed beneath your hammer blows."
