Overview[]

Ecuador[]

Ecuador's history is, in many ways, cyclical. It is a country that has always been struggling with social, political, economic, and geographic challenges. The same factors that have determined Ecuador's history over the last two centuries continue to dominate the country's landscape at the beginning of the 21st century.

During pre-Columbian times, a wide variety of indigenous groups coexisted in the territory known today as Ecuador for thousands of years before being colonized first by the Incas and later by the Spanish conquistadors. Although both conquests were brutal invasions, these original inhabitants suffered much more and for much longer under Spanish rule than under the Incas.

During their colonial history, as part of the Viceroyalties of Peru and New Granada, the inhabitants of these lands had to experience not only a host of new diseases for which they were culturally and immunologically unprepared but also slavery and inequity. The economic decline of Spain, together with the rise of the new ideals of the Enlightenment and the consequent expansion of the independence movement throughout Latin America, to which the country did not fail to join, led to its independence from Spain after bloody struggles on May 24, 1822. During the first years of independence, Ecuador was part of Simon Bolivar's Republic of Gran Colombia, a territory that also included the current nations of Venezuela and Colombia. This association did not last long. The establishment of Ecuador as a republic gave way to a period of strong Catholic Church influence. Eloy Alfaro and his followers then fought for many secular reforms during the Liberal Revolution.

At the time of the Great Depression, Ecuador experienced marked political instability that culminated in a war with Peru on the threshold of World War II. Ecuador's post-war period was characterized by increasing inequality and instability. Since then, Ecuador's contemporary history has been characterized by profound instability and absolute dependence on fluctuations in oil prices and international financial markets, as well as on its external debt.

Moreno[]

Gabriel García Moreno was an Ecuadorian politician and aristocrat who twice served as President of Ecuador from 1861-1865 and 1869-1875, and was assassinated during his second term after being elected to a third. He is noted for his conservatism, Catholic religious perspective, and rivalry with liberal strongman Eloy Alfaro. García Moreno was noted for efforts to economically and agriculturally advance Ecuador and for his staunch opposition to corruption.

Dawn of Man[]

"Hail, President Gabriel Moreno, seventh President of the Republic of Ecuador. A fledgling country beset by rebellion and poverty, Ecuador under your presidency would come to finally be united in piety and prosperity. Against the ire of your liberal opponents, you set out to transform the country into a modern, technical, and literate economy. This you achieved in thanks to your deep commitment to building Ecuador-up into a Catholic state. Though your opponents have since cosigned you to history as a mere dictator, Ecuador shall never forget your life-giving reforms.
