Dominican Republic[]
The Dominican Republic is a North American country located on the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles of the Caribbean Sea in the North Atlantic Ocean. The native Taíno people had inhabited Hispaniola prior to European contact, dividing it into five chiefdoms. Christopher Columbus claimed the island for Castile, landing there on his first voyage in 1492. The colony of Santo Domingo became the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas. A group of Dominicans deposed the Spanish governor and declared independence from Spain in November 1821, but were annexed by Haiti in February 1822. Independence came 22 years later in 1844, after victory in the Dominican War of Independence. The next 72 years saw several civil wars, failed invasions by Haiti, and a brief return to Spanish colonial status, before permanently ousting the Spanish during the Dominican Restoration War of 1863 to 1865. From 1930, the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo ruled until his assassination in 1961. Juan Bosch was elected president in 1962 but was deposed in a military coup in 1963. The Dominican Civil War of 1965 preceded the authoritarian rule of Joaquín Balaguer. Since 1978, the Dominican Republic has moved towards representative democracy.
Rafael Trujillo[]
Rafael Trujillo, also known as El Jefe, was a Dominican military officer and dictator who ruled the Dominican Republic from August 1930 until his assassination in May 1961. His rule was known as the Trujillo Era, and was one of the longest for a non-royal leader in the world, centered around a personality cult of the ruling family. It was also one of the most brutal. On 30 May 1961, Trujillo was assassinated by a group of conspirators led by general Antonio Imbert Barrera. In the immediate aftermath, Trujillo's son Ramfis took temporary control of the country, executing most of the conspirators. By November 1961, the Trujillo family was pressured into exile by the titular president Joaquín Balaguer, who introduced reforms to open up the regime. The murder ushered in civil strife which concluded with the Dominican Civil War and a US-OAS intervention, eventually stabilised under a multi-party system in 1966.

You were the ultimate winner of the chaos following the U.S. occupation, staying in your barracks when your president called for you against an uprising, ushering in the Trujillo Era. Oh, what an era it was. A capital renamed to Ciudad Trujillo, with monuments built and scattered to commemorate your glory! You asserted your dominance over your people and the Haitians, with the Parsley massacre the best demonstration of your power. You kept a good eye on your people, with the eyes and fist of the SIM ready to dispose of any of your political opponents, even if they were as powerful as the president of Venezuela. But some of your citizens were ungrateful, and you were so ignominiously executed by some rebel scum in your 1957 Chevy Bel Air. Preposterous.
Oh magnanimous Rafael Trujillo, take your revenge on all those who wronged you. Reorganise your tools to keep the people in check, and build the monuments to your greatness. Can you institute another Era of Trujillo for the people to rejoice? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?
