Overview[]
Denmark[]
Although neutral in World War I, Denmark would become unavoidably engrossed in World War II. In April 1940, Germany invaded Denmark, meeting little resistance. Denmark was allowed to maintain the majority of its own independent government functions and continued to cooperate with Germany economically during the occupation, until 1943. In August of that year, Denmark's leadership finally refused any further participation, and ordered the majority of its fleet to be scuttled. Throughout the occupation, the Danish government and the resistance movement successfully assisted the majority of Danish Jews in escaping to Sweden.
After its liberation in 1945, Denmark quickly joined the Allied forces and became one of the founding members of the United Nations. Denmark was also active in the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a military alliance formed in early 1949.
Christian X[]
Christian X was King of Denmark from 1912 to 1947 and the only king of Iceland (where the name was officially Christian X), between 1918 and 1944. He was a member of the House of Glücksburg and the first member of his family since king Frederick VII to have actually been born into the Danish royal family; both his father and his grandfather were born as princes of a German ducal family. Among his siblings was King Haakon VII of Norway.
His character as a ruler has been described as authoritarian and he strongly stressed the importance of royal dignity and power. His reluctance to embrace democracy resulted in the Easter Crisis of 1920, in which he dismissed the democratically elected cabinet with which he disagreed, and instated one of his own choosing. This was nominally his right in accordance with the constitution, but facing the risk of the monarchy being overthrown he was forced to accept democratic control of the state and the role as a nominal constitutional monarch.
During the German Occupation of Denmark, Christian become a popular symbol of resistance to German occupation, particularly because of the symbolic value of the fact that he rode every day through the streets of Copenhagen unaccompanied by guards. He also became the subject of a persistent urban legend according to which, during Nazi occupation, he donned the Star of David in solidarity with the Danish Jews. Danish Jews were not forced to wear the Star of David. However, the legend likely stems from a 1942 British report that claimed he threatened to don the star if this was forced upon Danish Jews, and was popularized when it was included in Leon Uris's best-selling novel, Exodus. This is also supported by the king's personal diary, where the following entry can be found:
"When you look at the inhumane treatment of Jews, not only in Germany but occupied countries as well, you start worrying that such a demand might also be put on us, but we must clearly refuse such this due to their protection under the Danish constitution. I stated that I could not meet such a demand towards Danish citizens. If such a demand is made, we would best meet it by all wearing the Star of David."
In addition, he helped finance the transport of Danish Jews to unoccupied Sweden, where they would be safe from Nazi persecution. With a reign spanning two world wars, and his role as a rallying symbol for Danish national sentiment during the German Occupation, he became one of the most popular Danish monarchs of modern times.
Dawn of Man[]
"Hail Christian X, King of Denmark and King of Iceland. As sovereign for nearly forty years, your reign would be marked by your triumphant resistance against the turmoil of the first and second worlds wars. It was in April of 1940 that Nazi Germany would bring its military might down to bare upon the Danish people, but through your leadership the nation would perservere and secure liberation. Thus would you cement your legacy and the legacy of your House as the symbol of Danish courage and unity.
Surrender your guards and venture into the streets, Your Majesty, for the hearts of the Danish people are with you. Can you stand tall and brave in the face of war and bring courage to the nation? Can you inspire your allies to come to your aide in these times of dire need? Can you build a civilization that stands the test of time?"
Introduction: "Welcome. I am Christian X. It is my hope that the two of us will learn to get along with one another. I would not have harm come to my people because of this chance meeting."
Defeat: "Even in this defeat, my people will continue to fight on."
