Overview[]

Denmark-Norway[]

Denmark–Norway is the historiographical name for a former political entity consisting of the united kingdoms of Denmark and Norway, including overseas Norwegian dependencies of Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and the Northern Isles. Following the departure of Sweden from the Kalmar Union, and its subsequent dissolution, in 1524 Denmark and Norway entered into another personal union, under Danish hegemony. In 1536 the kingdom of Norway was formally dissolved and integrated into Denmark, and as a consequence its Council of the Realm was abolished. However, Norway continued to have separate institutions and its own laws. Norway was re-established as a kingdom in 1660 after the introduction of absolutism. The personal union of the two kingdoms lasted until 1814, when Norway was ceded to Sweden by the House of Oldenburg after Denmark–Norway's defeat in the Napoleonic wars.

Frederick II[]

Frederick II was a member of the House of Oldenburg and was King of Denmark and Norway from 1559 and until his death in 1588. Ascending to the throne at the age of 24, he inherited a capable and strong kingdom, formed in large by his father, Christian III, after the civil war known as the Count's feud, after which Denmark saw a period of economic recovery and of a great increase in the centralised authority of the Crown. Frederick was, especially in his youth and unlike his father, belligerent and adversarial, aroused by honor and national pride, and so he began his reign auspiciously with a campaign, which reconquered Dithmarschen. However, after miscalculating the cost of the Northern Seven Years' War, he pursued a more prudent foreign policy. The remainder of Frederick II's reign was a period of tranquillity, in which king and nobles prospered, and were Frederick instead focused more on hunting and feasting with his councillers as well as architecture and science. The period saw a great number of architectural constructions, including the royal castle of Kronborg. Being a great patron of science and the arts, he granted the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe the island of Ven, near Copenhagen, and gave him the means to found an several observatories there.

DMS Denmark Frederick II Diplo

Art by DMS

Learned Fredrick II, King of Denmark and Norway, friend of princes and kings, your reign began with the crashing of war and clashing of politics as the realm transitioned from Catholicism into Protestantism. But despite a youthful taste for war, you soon learned to guide Denmark and Norway with a firm and clever hand. You learned to honor those around you, whether king, noble, or commoner and how to choose, attract, and keep the best and brightest minds in Europe. You also claimed naval superiority over the seas of Northern Europe, ridding the waters of pirates and foreign powers alike.

Prudent and fair, King of the North, you people yearn for a leader who has both the brash pride to lead them to war and the evenhanded temperment to bring about a flourishing society for all your subjects, noble and common, to build, on reason and favor, a civilization that will stand the test of time!

Introduction: Well met, friend. I am King of Denmark and Norway and some icy cold islands in the middle of nowhere, Frederick II. You need me to spell it for you? Alas, I cannot, but I can share with you a cup of ale and some rather funny insults about Swedes!

Defeat: Defeated, ja, but my unsullied legacy will forever live on in the hearts of the pure.
