Overview[]

Date[]

The Date clan is a Japanese samurai kin group, founded in the early Kamakura period by Isa Tomomune, later known as Date Tomomune. Famous members of the clan include Date Masamune, Date Terumune, and Date Yoshikuni. They were daimyo of Sendai. The family took its name from the Date district. The Date clan was founded in the early Kamakura period by Isa Tomomune, who originally came from the Isa district of Hitachi Province. The family took its name from the Date district of Mutsu Province which had been awarded in 1189 to Isa Tomomune by Minamoto no Yoritomo, for his assistance in the Genpei War. During the Nanboku-cho Wars in the 1330s, the Date supported the Imperial Southern Court of Emperor Go-Daigo through Kitabatake Akiie, who had been appointed Chinjufu Shogun of the Defense of the North by the emperor. As warlords gained and lost power in the Sengoku period, trying to unite the country, the Date, along with a handful of other powerful families, did all they could to retain independence and dominance over their section of the land. They resisted the invasions of these warlords into the north. Date Masamune contributed to this effort, consolidating the families of the north into alliances against the major warlords. In 1589, Masamune with the help of former Ashina’s samurai, Inawashiro Morikuni, seized the Aizu Domain of the Ashina at the Battle of Suriagehara, and he installed himself at Kurokawa Castle in Wakamatsu Province. However, the following year, Hideyoshi triumphed over the Hojo of Odawara, and obliged Masamune to be content with the fief of Yonezawa. Masamune ultimately gained some degree of independence by supporting Tokugawa Ieyasu. Ieyasu granted the Date much of the north, and yet the Date were not fully trusted. Despite the Date contribution of reinforcements for the Tokugawa during the battle of Sekigahara, the Date were viewed as a threat. In the Edo period, the Date were identified as one of the tozama or outsider clans. In 1600, Ieyasu charged the Date to fight against Uesugi Kagekatsu, and, with the assistance of Mogami Yoshiteru, Masamune’s forces defeated Naoe Kanetsugu. In recognition of this success in battle, Masamune was granted the fiefs in twelve districts which had been held until that time by the Uesugi clan.

Date Masamune[]

Date Masamune was a powerful Daimyo during Japan's Azuchi–Momoyama period through to the early Edo period. He went on to found the modern-day city of Sendai. He was an outstanding tactician, and was known for his missing eye, which gave rise to his nickname, the One-Eyed Dragon of Oshu.

Dawn of Man[]

"May fortune be in your favour, Date Masamune, the One-Eyed Dragon of Oshu, head of Date clan and Daimyo. A life of battle was one which was given you, but it was not your only pursuit. You built many castles and increased trade, becoming known more for your interaction with the outside world and steadfast ethics than your military prowess. You organized expeditions to Europe, allowed foreign trade and the practice and spread of Christianity, and built the city of Sendai up, using foreign techniques which you adopted to get a cutting edge. But you were in a new age of Japan, and those such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, while sometimes being your patrons, were often at odds with you. Thus, deftly navigating the difficulties of the new world, you build up a power within the framework of this new Japan. Their pressure would often go against your wishes, such as when Ieyasu outlawed Christianity.
