Civilization V Customisation Wiki

Darfur led by Ali Dinar is a custom civilization mod by DGN and Grant.

This mod requires Brave New World.

The Sultanate of Darfur was a pre-colonial state in present-day Sudan. It existed from 1603 to October 24, 1874, when it fell to the Sudanese warlord Rabih az-Zubayr and again from 1898 to 1916, when it was conquered by the British and integrated into Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. At its peak in the late 18th and early 19th century it stretched all the way from Darfur in the west to Kordofan and the western banks of the White Nile in the east, giving it the size of present-day Nigeria.

Ali Dinar[]

Ali Dinar was a Sultan of the Sultanate of Darfur and ruler from the Keira dynasty. In 1898, with the decline of the Mahdists, he managed to regain Darfur's independence.

A sword owned by Ali Dinar, heir to the throne of the Sultanate of Darfur. He was killed in action during the Anglo-Egyptian Darfur Expedition in 1916, with the sword being on display at the British Museum.

A rebellion led by him in 1915—in the context of his giving his support to the Ottoman Empire during the First World War— led the British government to dispatch the Anglo-Egyptian Darfur Expedition, in which he was killed in action, after which his Sultanate was incorporated into the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium.

Dawn of Man[]

Greetings, Ali Dinar, Sultan of Darfur! Son of Zakariya and the great al-Fadl of the Keira dynasty, your skill as a politician and leader knows no bounds. In your youth you were held captive by the Ottoman state which had so cruelly laid waste to the ancestral kingdom. You opposed the Mahdist revolution, but it would soon provide an opportunity to rise in the ranks, and you became the righteous governor of your land. The collapse of the Mahdi cause left you free to become Sultan of Darfur, but the return of the British yoke restricted your people's freedom. Hemmed to the east and west by European empires, you intervened and conspired where you could to strengthen the kingdom. It was only in the flames of the Great War that you broke free from their colonial bonds, believing that the Turks which had once made you prisoner could bring you strength. It was not to be. The desert tribesmen of the north and the British forged an unholy alliance to cripple the ancient kingdom. You resisted in the mountains but were ultimately slain, refusing to surrender. The people survived, but the dynasty perished with you.

Leaderscreen by Grant

Great Sultan, Darfur suffers under the pain of famine, war and poverty. Corrupt leaders throttle your once lush and fertile lands. As the last Sultan of Darfur, your name is a calling card for justice after decades of thirst, hunger and torment. Can you restore your people's sovereignity? Can you be that sovereign? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of Time?

Introduction: "Blessings. This is the sacred land of the Fur, where your reverence of Allah would be most welcome."

Defeat: "The Fur people fade back into submission. Our existence and insurgency nonetheless continues."
