The Civ Design Competition (CDC for short) is a design (and sometimes art) competition where people, from modders, to mod-users, to simple civ fans, could participate in challenges, submitting designs and art for custom civs, leaders, and game mechanics, for Civs V, VI, and sometimes Beyond Earth.
Civilisations marked in bold have since been released as proper mods and as such, won't appear in design sub-articles.

Myth-Making
Suggested Civs/Leaders - Mythological 'states' or leaders, historical leaders that incorporate myths in some way (cough cough modern politicians), designs based on myths about historical leaders (a north korea where the leader has all the superpowers he's meant to teehee), etc.
Suggested Mechanics - Story-telling, myth-making, events, golden ages, historical moments, etc.

Non-States
Suggested Civs/Leaders - Non-State polities such as indigenous groups, tribes, nations, social/political movements, organized/disorganized religions, cultures, Antarctica, schools of belief, etc. Anything without a centralized political structure, basically (for the purposes of this, no kingdoms, no republics, no countries, no micronations etc.). Lots of room here; from anything as abstract and amorphous as the 'Chicago School of Economics' civ to something 'state-like' (in the sense of claiming political authority) like the Iroquois Confederacy. Check the rules; this time you don't need a Leader.
Suggested Mechanics - NGOs, ideologies, nationalism, international systems, social classes/castes, factions, secret societies; anything that operates outside the control of your role-as-civ/the player-as-civ i.e. as the state, be that domestically or internationally.

Labouring Leaders
Elaboration - Leaders with an interesting job/career/profession/hobby BESIDES their political occupation (monarch, president, chairman, etc.), with your design showcasing that job somehow (could be abstracted into a civ focus, or more particular to the leader). This can be before, during, or after their political career. For instance, a Cincinnati civ that generates cabbages during peace and death legions during war. Alternatively, a Hirohito civ focused on generating Science from Fishies.
Bonus Challenge
Challenge/theme: Design a civilization and/or leader from amongst JFD's own (either VI or V; interchangeable) with a diffo thematic
June[]
Month of Lads
Elaboration - Design a Civ as a gift to someone special. You can choose anyone - someone within the community, modder or otherwise, or someone outside we don't even know (and in those cases, feel free to keep it ambiguous; 'this design is dedicated to Recil's mom, for instance). Use this as an opportunity to design something based on someone else's interests, with no other restrictions!

Colonial Conflicts
Elaboration - TWO civs per (single) entry that showcases a civs and/or leaders on two sides of a colonial conflict. By a colonial conflict, I mean you must submit in a single entry a design two for civs: a colonizing power and a colonizer related to that power. These two civs need not be contemporoneous (one might be an 18th century British and the other a modern African state), and the nature of this conflict need not be military (it could be cultural, religious, territorial, nationalist, etc.). You also need not focus on European colonialism, nor Western, nor even colonialism in the typical sense - you might have a Roman Constantine civ as your colonizer and Julian as your colonized to represent, even if indirectly, the Christianization of the Roman Empire. Be creative; important thing is to represent a colonizer and colonized in some way. Good luck hf gg post elo!
Bonus Challenge - Stormy Weather
Elaboration - Imagine Civ had a weather system (Civ VIers don't have to imagine teehee ). Design a civ or leader around your imagined weather system, and provide a brief overview/summary of that weather system in order to contextualise your civ/leader design. You can go into as much or as little detail for your weather system as possible, but your civ or leader should draw on historical weather (mainly, disasters, but perhaps a particular trope like foggy London or windy Wellington or Turkey Turkey). Civ VIers, feel free to take liberties with the existing system in VI.

Far From Home
Elaboration - A Civ or Leader that is somehow out of place. For example, you might choose a leader that is not from the region they're ruling (e.g. George I of UK), or a leader that has adopted a foreign religion (e.g. Menander I and Buddhism), or an entire peoples that have migrated or been displaced far from their original home (e.g. Afro-Caribbeans). You might also choose a non-human leader! For mechanics, you might like to focus on a migration system, a state religion/leaders'-vs-civ's religion mechanic, or perhaps a system of displacing the leaders of other civs.

Dawn of Civilization
Elaboration - A Civ or Leader representing the idea of the dawn of Civilization. You might interpret this in terms of the Civilization franchise and design one of the Civs featured in Civ 1 (it's the anniversary :D), or otherwise a cultural (or ideological) Civilization.

Witchcraft and Wizardry
Elaboration - A Civ or Leader with some connection to magic, withcraft, wizardry, occultism, or similar. This might be a leader/civ that is/was believed to have magical powers, or a leader/civ representing a particular attempt to suppress magical association.

Power for Dinner
Elaboration - A Civ or Leader representing the political power of Food. This might be a civ design based around the Food yield, or around Food-based resources, or it might be based around a specific Food-related theme ('breadbasket of Europe civ', 'hydraulic despotism', etc.). For the purposes of this, Water can count, so long as it relates to Food/Population rather than Navalness. Finally, you might also do a Leader that was particularly gluttonous for food.

Gift of Giving (To Myself)
Elaboration - A Civ or Leader that YOU have always wanted to do or see done (whether by yourself or by a specific modder). This is basically anything goes, but truly try and think of some Civ you've been putting off, or always wanted an opportunity to do something for. If you're strapped, then doing a gift for a specific other person is also allowed. Same goes for mechanics, and art, too!
