Chechen Republic of Ichkeria[]
The Chechen Republic of Ichkeria was a de facto state that controlled most of the former Checheno-Ingush ASSR. With the impending dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, an independence movement, the Chechen National Congress, was formed, led by ex-Soviet Air Force general and new Chechen President Dzhokhar Dudayev. It campaigned for the recognition of Chechnya as a separate nation. In the ensuing decade, the territory was locked in an ongoing struggle between various factions, usually fighting unconventionally. After achieving de facto independence from Russia in 1996, kidnappings and violence between gangs plagued the region, which the government was unable to control. The de facto state was crushed in the Second Chechen War.
Dzhokhar Dudayev[]
Dzhokhar Dudayev was a military leader, statesman and politician of the 1990's Chechen Independence movement from Russia. He served as the first president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, from 1991 until his assassination in 1996. Previously he had been a Major General of Aviation in the Soviet Armed Forces. Dzhokhar and his family had been deported to Siberia in 1944 in an act of ethnic cleansing and genocide. From 1962 he served in the Soviet Air Forces, reaching the rank of Major General.

"The cause seems doomed, oh resilient Dzhokhar Dudayev, President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria and Major General in the Soviet Air Force. Being born mere days before the deportation of your whole family from Chechnya to the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, you served in the Soviet Air Force, where you served faithfully until they ordered you to crush Estonian nationalism, which you refused to do. Returning to Chechnya, you became President of Chechnya, a position you would hold until the end of your life. From this day onwards, you fought for the Chechen people and their independence, never tiring even as Russia attempted to invade and reabsorb them. But fighting was not your only concern, as you sought to reform the Chechen language, moving from Cyrillic to the Latin alphabet instead. But the independence struggle was hard, and economic failures and increase in crime weighed heavily upon your fledgeling nation. But in the dying days of the First Chechen War, following the destruction of Grozny but mere months before Chechen victory, Russia assassinated you using two laser-guided missiles.
