Overview

Cascadia

Cascadia is a bioregion and bioregional movement located within the western region of North America. Potential boundaries differ, with some drawn along existing political state and provincial lines, and others drawn along larger ecological, cultural, political, and economic boundaries. The boundaries are generally those defined by the Cascadia Bioregion. The proposed country or region largely would consist of the Canadian province of British Columbia and the US States of Washington and Oregon. Including all parts of the bioregion, Cascadia would stretch from coastal Alaska in the north into Northern California in the south, and inland to include parts of Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, and Yukon. More conservative advocates propose borders that include the land west of the crest of Cascade Range, and the western side of British Columbia.

Osborne Russell

Osborne Russell was born June 12, 1814, in the village of Bowdoinham, Maine. He was one of nine children in farming family. As a child, he received sufficient enough education that he could easily become a proficient writer. At age 16, Russell ran away for a life at sea, but quickly gave up that career by deserting his ship at New York. Afterwards he spent three years in the employ of the Northwest Fur Trapping and Trading Company, which operated in what would later become Wisconsin and Minnesota. Russell first came to the Oregon Country in 1834 as a member of Nathaniel J. Wyeth's second expedition where Russell joined Nathaniel Wyeth’s Columbia River Fishing and Trading Company expedition to the Rocky Mountains.

He participated in the May 2, 1843 Champoeg Meeting, voting in favor of forming a government. In October of that year he was selected by the First Executive Committee to serve as the Supreme Judge for the Provisional Government of Oregon and served until May 14, 1844. In 1844, he was elected to the second Executive Committee of the Provisional Government of Oregon. He was allied with the group that planned to create an independent Republic of the Pacific and thus was unsuccessful in his run for governor of the Provisional Government in 1845, losing to George Abernethy. Russell eventually went to California, and died in 1892.

You were born to farmers at the other end of the continent, but you ran west and joined the legendary exploits to the Rockies, learning the ways of the wilderness like none before. You became the master of the fur trade, establishing yourself among the mountains with fellow traders and native tribesmen. But the yoke of the Union hung heavy, and you forged a movement to create a free republic of the Pacific, where the laws of congressmen could not touch your free and wild way of life. Alas, this noble dream did not come to fruition, and Oregon remained unfree.

As the tyranny of Washington grows ever stronger, they cry out your name. Will you fulfil the dream of independence for all west of the great divide? Can you shake from the trees the cobwebs of modernity and usher in a new dawn over the Pacific? Can you build a civilization that stands the test of Time?"
