Overview

Byzantium

Existing for more than 1,000 years, the Byzantine Empire, centered in the legendary city of Constantinople, was initially formed as the eastern seat of power for the mighty Roman Empire which was split into Eastern and Western. Located on the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa, Constantinople easily became the world's trading center and the primary trade hub in the region. Due to its strategic location, and as the center of Orthodox Christianity, Constantinople flourish despite the internal conflicts that led to the decline of Rome in the west. Inspired by number of memorable rulers, the Byzantine Empire was also a source of great cultural growth along the eastern Mediterranean, its affluence allowing for grand displays of art, architecture, science, religion, and music. The Byzantine Empire's official language was first the Latin and later changed to Greek, which was the lingua franca in Eastern Mediterranean.

John II

John II Komnenos "the Handsome" was emperor of the Byzantine Empire from 1118 to 1143 AD. John, almost constantly on campaign throughout his reign, would continue the military successes of his father Alexios I with significant victories in the Balkans, Armenia, and Asia Minor. The Byzantine Empire, thus, regained something of its former sparkle and the respect of its rivals across the Mediterranean.

Dawn of Man

"The Roman people wait with bated breath for your command, John II Komnenos, emperor of Byzantium! Chosen as the successor of the highly energetic Alexios I, you would ascend the throne amid the schemes of the imperial court, spearheaded by your ambitious sister Anna. By pardoning these conspirators you would demonstrate the clemency and piety that would mark your just reign. Your virtuous rulership would not go unrewarded, as God would grant you boundless strength to continue your father's quest to reunite the tattered remnants of the Byzantine empire. Your military campaigns would blot out the perfidious Pechenegs and win back for the empire her heartlands. Through your greatness in arms and in character, the empire of the Romans regained its former luster, and Constantinople its title as 'queen of cities'.

Glorious autocrat of the Romans, Byzantium has once more fallen into a dark path. She requires your aid to raise her once more to grace and greatness. Will you heed the call of the Romans? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?Brave President Grant, America lies in ruins, and once more requires your services to steer her into recovery. Your people are once again divided and need a hero to cast their united gazes upon. Can you call for a time of peace and a time for mending the wounds of war? Can you reconstruct the United States into a more fair and more just society? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "I am John II Komnenos, and this is Byzantium, the empire God has entrusted to me. What tidings do you bring us?"

Defeat: "And so the empire is wrested from my hands by a barbarian. I can only pray that God may guide the Roman people in this new exile."
