Overview[]

Independence[]

The Burmese general, Aung San, was hailed as an independence hero and he and his thirty comrades led the independence transition. In particular, a problem was that of salience was whether the non-Burmese nations should be given separate independence. Through the work of Aung San and his belief in federalism, the Panglong Conference was held to bring the concerns together and to establish a framework of federalism. This, however, shatter on July 19, 1947, when Aung San was assassinated along with other top cabinet members. This sudden change drastically reduced the faith of the minorities in the new Burmese government, but there was still belief for the hope of nation as independence was signed in on January 4, 1948. The first president was the former Shan prince Sao Shwe Thaik and U Nu, one of Aung San's confidants who had retired from politics during the assassination, was appointed Prime Minister.

U Nu[]

Immediately after independence, U Nu had to deal with the ethnic and communist insurgencies that had popped up after the drop in confidence with the assassination of Aung San, the promiser of federalism. The Burmese army, now independence, kept much of the structure and U Nu's government sent out the territorial forces to deal with the insurgency in one year. While the government was enacting military reforms to deal with the insurgencies, U Nu was organising the acquisition and tour of a relic of the Buddha into the tense borderlands.

At the same time the new democracy was plagued with infighting in the capital of Yangon where the various socialist, communist parties constantly fought against U Nu's non-aligned style of Buddhist socialist policy. The Chinese civil war started coming to an end and the KMT invaded Burma, to which the government formed the Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League to counter and fight the newfound invasion. Continued American support for the KMT soured any remaining ties the Burmese government had with the Free World and refusing to join the attempt at creating the Southeast Asia Treaty Organisation (SEATO).

The AFPFL founded some stability for the country as it moved forward non-aligned. It was the first country to recognise the People's Republic of China and one of the earliest to recognise Israel. Burma was the supposed rising star in Southeast Asia and partnered with Indonesia in the Bandung Conference to declare the non-aligned movement. The country recovered over the decade from the war, but by 1958, the AFPFL's former tensions started swelling back to unamenable levels. To prevent the communist party from taking over through subterfuge, U Nu asked the Army chief of staff Ne Win to coup the country, arrest communists and re-hold elections.

With a new baseline for elections, U Nu ran on promising Buddhist governance and the declaration of Buddhism as the state religion. Although he won a fair majority, the coalition did not last as Sao Shwe Thaik led a movement attempting to invoke the clause to leave the Union given in the Panglong conference. The Kachin Independence Organisation had also flared up to separate from the newly Buddhist country in 1961. The unstable situation ultimately led to Ne Win holding another coup d'etat against U Nu, this time without his consent in 1962.

Dawn of Man[]

We greet you with glory, Prime Minister Nu of the Union of Burma. You are the leader of a free and democratic Burma, a union of its many nationalities united under the democratic promise of federalism and guided by you under the auspices of Buddhist socialism. Burma is non-aligned, it has taken the middle way under your guidance and the principles of democracy. The Burmese are a proud nation who fought off the wicked foes of imperialism and came through the other side strong, united and free. Under your reign, the new independent Union flourished its most free and prosperous fate.

O U Nu, but the wheels of Samsara turn relentlessly. Political infighting and ethnic conflict threw the delicate balance into turmoil. Now the tyrants have come back out to play! Will you provide stability for the divided land? Will you step in to guide us to the victory of the Dhamma? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?

Introduction: "Auspiciousness to thee. I am the Prime Minister of this Union, the people of Burma greet you."

Defeat: "Alas, it happens. Soon you will be an old politician who has come to appreciate the cause for which we stand."
