Overview[]

The Bunuba[]

The Bunuba, also known as the Bunaba, Punapa, or Punuba, are a group of Indigenous Australians and are one of the traditional owners of the southern West Kimberley, in Western Australia. Many now live in and around the town of Fitzroy Crossing. They speak the Bunuba language, which is one of only two members of the Bunuban language family, and was one of at least 44 languages that were spoken in the Kimberley.

Jandamarra[]

Jandamarra, known also as Tjandamurra, or by his name given by European settlers, Pidgeon, was an Aboriginal Australian man of the Bunuba people who led one of many organised armed insurrections against the European colonisation of Australia. Initially utilised as a tracker for the police, he became a fugitive when he was forced to capture his own people. He led a three-year campaign against police and European settlers. He was renowned for his hit-and-run tactics and his abilities to hide and disappear. Jandamarra was eventually killed by another tracker at Tunnel Creek on 1 April 1897. His body was buried by his family at the Napier Range, where it was placed inside a boab tree.

Dawn of Man[]

"Greetings, oh bold Jandamarra, hero of the Bunuba! Your people are a proud and reslient one, custodians of the land around what is now known as Fitzroy Crossing for tens of thousands of years. Though you had earned a position of privilege within the British colonial system, you sacrificed it all to fulfil your obligations to your people. Spurred on by settlers encroaching on your traditional lands and authorities committing atrocities against your people, you rose up in rebellion to colonial rule! For three years you waged effective guerrilla war in your traditional lands, attacking and escaping British forces so successfully you gained a reputation as an almost supernatural being. Unfortunately your rebellion was tragically cut short by your death at the hands of an enlisted Aboriginal tracker, but the legacy of your resistance will forever remain!

Introduction: "Halt! I am Jandamarra, protector of the Bunuba people! Who are you to trespass in our lands?"

Defeat: "Agh! I may fall here, but the spirit of my people lives on, and you cannot defeat a spirit!"
