Overview

Brunei

The Bruneian Empire was a precursor to the modern state of Brunei. Originating as a Majapahit vassal state in northwestern Borneo, it became fully independent around 1400 and expanded its influence over Borneo, Sulu, and parts of the Philippines. However, growing European involvement in maritime Southeast Asia weakened Brunei during the seventeenth century and beyond. In 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate.

Bolkiah

Bolkiah ibn Sulaiman was the sixth sultan of Brunei. His reign stretched almost forty years, from 1485 to 1524. Bolkiah expanded Brunei's sphere of influence dramatically, leading his reign to be termed the "Golden Age of Brunei." He was an adventurous ruler who traveled his realm frequently. Bolkiah was nicknamed "Nakhoda Ragam", Malay for "the singing captain", in Bornean and Malay traditions.
