Overview[]

Brazil[]

Paulo Coelho, Brazil's greatest novelist, wrote of the history of his people, "They were seeking out the treasure of their destiny, without actually wanting to live out their destiny." Among former colonies, Brazil is unique in the Americas because, beyond gaining its independence through a relatively peaceful path, it did not fragment into separate countries as did British and Spanish possessions. Brazil was a Portuguese colony from the time of the arrival of Pedro Cabral, who claimed it for his sovereign in 1500 AD, until the royal family in exile from their occupied homeland elevated it to the status of kingdom in 1815. Full independence was achieved in 1822 when the Empire of Brazil was created with a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary government. With the overthrow of Pedro II, the second and last emperor, in 1889 AD it became a republic. Although the republic would suffer through dictatorships and military juntas over the next century, true democracy returned in the 1980s when the first elected civilian government assumed power after a negotiated transition. Under a succession of able leaders, Brazil achieved political and economic stability, became a vital and influential member of the international community, and has at last achieved "the treasure of [its] destiny."

João Goulart[]

João Belchior Marques Goulart, also known as Jango, was a Brazilian politician who served as the 24th president of Brazil until a military coup d'état deposed him on 1 April 1964. He was considered the last left-wing president of Brazil until Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office in 2003.

Hail, João Goulart, rightful President of Brazil until your deposing by a military coup. Known affectionately as Jango, after your early career as a businessman, you rose high under the tutelage of Getúlio Vargas, serving as Minister of Labour, Industry and Trade. It was your closeness to the poorest of Brazil that urged you to help the people’s welfare, signed a series of decrees favoring social security, and shocking the conservative sectors by receiving workers and ordinary people in your office. Rising first to Vice President, and then to President, you called for unity, democracy and reform, operating under the new parliamentary system. This system proved to be a roadblock for reform, and a presidential system soon took its place. Initiating the Base reforms, you combatted adult illiteracy, attempted land and electoral reform, and attempted to control the multinational companies taking advantage of Brazil. But your enemies had begun to call you communist, and with the help of clandestine United States backing, the military threw you out, and you were never to return to your beloved brazil.

President Jango, Brazil is once again teetering on the edge of dictatorship. Right-wing forces have resolved to plunge Brazil into another age of ignorance and despotism. You must stand, and once again promise a better Brazil of hope and democracy. Can you lead Brazil once more to fulfil it’s potential. Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?

Introduction: "Greetings. I am Joao Goulart, but most people call me Jango. I hope you come in the name of peace and democracy."

Defeat: "I will only return to my country through the front door, democratically. My duty, my right is to remain quiet, one day History judges me."
