Deriving its name from the Old High German term "Ostarrichi" first recorded in 996 by Holy Roman Emperor Otto III, the small, landlocked nation of Austria has long been an influential player in the political and military sagas of Europe. Beginning in the 13th century with the nearly 650 year rule of the powerful Habsburg Monarchy, Austria emerged as one of the premier nations of Europe, establishing strong alliances and far-reaching trade agreements across the continent. The later union of Austria and Hungary as a singular empire brought stability to both nations, only to be broken by the turmoil of World War I, and eventually, the German occupation of World War II. In the aftermath of these great conflicts, the borders of Austria were recreated, and the independent Republic of Austria stands today as a democratic nation that prides itself on maintaining neutrality and stability.

Kurt Waldheim[]

Kurt Waldheim was an Austrian politician and diplomat. Waldheim was the fourth Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1972 to 1981, and President of Austria from 1986 to 1992. While running for President in 1986, the revelation of his service as a Nazi German intelligence officer in Greece and Yugoslavia raised controversy inside and outside Austria, leading him to being deemed persona non grata by the United States and, officially or informally, by nearly every other nation in the world outside the Arab world.

Dawn of Man[]

"You may once again have it all, Kurt Waldheim, President of Austria and 4th Secretary General of the United Nations. Cultivating a glittered diplomatic career, you went from notable Austrian diplomat to Secretary General of the United Nations; your voice had been on the golden disk of the Voyager Spacecraft, you had been the first Secretary-General to visit North Korea, you had gone to Iran in the midst of the Iranian Hostage Crisis. You had respect. You had friends and admirers all over the world. But it was all built on a lie. While running for president, your past had caught up to you. Revealed to be complicit in Nazi war crimes, while you won the election, you were formally or informally shunned from almost every country, making your diplomatic role difficult and marking your legacy with a black stain.

President Waldheim, you are now being thrust back into the world of diplomacy. It is up to you to run from, or atone for, your past. You must navigate the new rocky shoals of diplomacy if you are to have any hope to have success. Can you balance Austrian neutrality, the nature of your past, and your status as a pariah to build your country to glory? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "I send greetings on behalf of the people of my nation. We step out onto the world stage seeking only peace and friendship."

Defeat: "I did not expect miracles or spectacular successes, but I wished to avoid this ignominious end."
