Overview

Austria

Deriving its name from the Old High German term "Ostarrichi" first recorded in 996 by Holy Roman Emperor Otto III, the small, landlocked nation of Austria has long been an influential player in the political and military sagas of Europe. Beginning in the 13th century with the nearly 650 year rule of the powerful Habsburg Monarchy, Austria emerged as one of the premier nations of Europe, establishing strong alliances and far-reaching trade agreements across the continent. The later union of Austria and Hungary as a singular empire brought stability to both nations, only to be broken by the turmoil of World War I, and eventually, the German occupation of World War II. In the aftermath of these great conflicts, the borders of Austria were recreated, and the independent Republic of Austria stands today as a democratic nation that prides itself on maintaining neutrality and stability.

Karl Renner

Karl Renner was an Austrian politician of the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Austria. He is often referred to as the "Father of the Republic" because he led the first government of German-Austria and the First Austrian Republic in 1919 and 1920, and was once again decisive in establishing the present Second Republic after the fall of Nazi Germany in 1945, becoming its first President after World War II (and fourth overall).

"Hail, Father of the Republic, Karl Renner of Austria. From the humblest of beginnings, your intelligence allowed you to rise to become one of the foremost advocative voices for an Austrian state. You put your beliefs into action by becoming the first Chancellor of an independent Austria, rising from the ashes of the failed Austro-Hungarian Empire. Attempting to navigate the treacherous post-war times, you introduced a number of social reforms to better the quality of life of your people. But after your country was taken by fascism, and later, Nazism you attempted to distance yourself from the politics of the day. However, you were called back into action after the Soviet Union crossed into Austria during World War II and put yourself at your country’s disposal once more. Kept under observation by the Soviets and unrecognised by the Western allies, you navigated the treacherous beginnings of the Cold War to keep Austria as an independent and prosperous state.

Can you be the one to lead Austria into a period of not just sovereignty, but success?
